Rival game results in Goldbugs loss

October 21, 2016

On Friday, Oct. 7, the Alva Goldbugs hosted long-time rivals the Chisholm Longhorns. The Bugs and Longhorns vied for the top title, but the Bugs suffered a close loss to the Longhorns at 24-29.

The Bugs started off slowly with a couple opportunities missed during the first quarter. The score was kept at two goose eggs for most of the first half of the game, as Alva and Chisholm both started slowly in this rivalry game.

Chisholm was the first of the two to get the game from their 24-yard line along with a 70-yard drive, which ended in a touchdown during the second quarter. The scoring began with 0-8, Chisholm on top. After Chisholm came back from the locker room, they made two more touchdowns, making the score 21-0, Chisholm.

After those touchdowns Alva came back early in the final quarter when they got their first points of the night with a run from quarterback Mitchell Meyer. Alva made a successful two-point conversion, leaving the Bugs trailing Chisholm 8-21 with only 10:39 left in this vicious game.

On Alva’s second possession of the last quarter it was not looking good for the Bugs. Quarterback Meyer saw Hayden Colwell open for a pass; this resulted in a 42-yard touchdown run. It looked as if Alva was making a comeback with a score of 16-21.

With 4:19 left in the game the Bugs forced Chisholm to turn the ball over and started a drive at their 15-yard line. However, Chisholm was able to intercept a pass from Meyer, resulting in another 6 points for the Longhorns.

Alva had one last drive. Colwell received the kick return and turned it into the last touchdown of the game, making the ending score of this rivalry game 24-29.

Alva played a tough game with the Longhorns but Chisholm ended up on top by five small points.
