Fifth grader wins Barber County Spelling Bee for second year

Brooke Boyce (left), a fifth grader at Medicine Lodge Elementary School, is a two-year champion of the Barber County Spelling Bee and competes at state next week. Seventh-grader Rylee Jacobson was runner-up.

For the second consecutive year, Brooke Boyce, age 10, is champion of the Barber County, Kansas, Spelling Bee. A fifth grader at Medicine Lodge Elementary School, Boyce earned this title over competitors that included eighth-grade students.

When asked how she's won over older students for two years, Boyce replied, "The words weren't that hard ... it's nerves that get people."

Her winning word was "enumerated."

The second-place winner was Rylee Jacobson. She missed spelling the word "stratagems" correctly. Age 13, she is a seventh grader and the daughter of Brienna MacDonald and Travis Jacobson...
