Getting his wife in trouble leads to more charges

A plan to get his wife in trouble backfired for a Cherokee man. He ended up with additional felony charges along with his wife.

Corwyn Michael Madison, 26, of Cherokee has been charged with three felonies: (1) child neglect, (2) possession of controlled dangerous substance (methamphetamine) and (3) maintaining a place for keeping and/or selling controlled substance. He is also charged with a misdemeanor of unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia. His wife, Mandy Lee Madison, 37, of Cherokee is charged with the same three felonies and one misdemeanor.

According to online court records, Corwyn posted a bond for a May 17 felony child neglect charge in Alfalfa County. His next court appearance in that case is set for July 5.

Court documents show that on May 24 just after 8 p.m. Cherokee Assistant Police Chief Ryan McNeil met Corwyn at his residence at 121 N. Grand to provide a civil standby at Corwyn’s request. Corwyn resides at the address with his wife Mandy, her two male children and a male roommate. Corwyn was concerned about potential problems between Mandy and himself while retrieving his belongings.

Corwyn knocked at both the front and rear doors of the residence and did not get an answer. He was able to retrieve belongings from the garage and spoke to Mandy by telephone about retrieving his belongings from the house. Mandy told him she was in Wichita and said she would get his belongings to him on May 26.

McNeil was advised by dispatch that Mandy had called and requested an extra patrol because she alleged Corwyn knew how to break into the house. However, McNeil was aware from previous contact with both subjects that Corwyn was a resident at the address and Mandy had no legal authority to prevent him from entering without a court order.

Corwyn then tried the front door which was found to be unlocked. He retrieved clothing and other belongings from the residence. As Corwyn left a bedroom, he stated he did not want to do this but that he knew something about getting Mandy with more charges. He walked back into the bedroom and reached under the left side of the bed, removing a silver and black metal box. He removed a purple bandana stating he knew Mandy was lying to him and that it was a meth pipe.

McNeil asked if there was anything else in the room and Corwyn pulled out a second silver and black metal case which he opened and placed on the bed. It contained a multi-colored bandana, a black zipper case with flowers on it and a clear plastic baggie containing a crystal-like substance. McNeil requested that the dispatch log show that Corwyn surrendered the items to him. Inside the boxes he found numerous items of drug paraphernalia. The items were collected and secured at the police department.

Corwyn admitted to McNeil that he had used illegal drugs in the past and had told Mandy to quit using illegal drugs. Corwyn also stated his fingerprints would be on the items because of using illegal drugs in the past. He wrote out a brief statement regarding surrendering the property.
