Burlington Board of Education meets, board filing dates next week

One of these four Burlington High School girls will be crowned Basketball Homecoming Queen Thursday at 6 p.m. in the Burlington gymasium. The young men will escort them. Burlington School Superintendent Glen Elliott announced that Burlington's Basketball Homecoming is changed to this Thursday night.

The JV girls game will start at 4 p.m., followed by the JV boys. Homecoming coronation is at 6 p.m., followed by the Lady Elks basketball game at 6:30 p.m., and then the Elks game afterward.

Elliott explained that homecoming was changed from Friday night because Burlington is playing Waynoka. Waynoka's football team are Academic Champions and will be presented their award Friday night at the state level. Burlington's Basketball Homecoming Queen Candidates are: Caitlin Flackman, Stephanie Croft, Abigal Trujillo and Jaden Allen. Their escorts are: Brenner Clark, Ty Stricker, Gavin McCullough and Deacon Burleson. Kindergarten helpers are: David Reimer and Kennedy Jantz.

Burlington's Board Meets and Filing Period Next Week

The Burlington Board of Education met for the monthly meeting at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 21. Members present were: Terry Graham, Allison Armbruster, Aaron Smith, T.J. Rockenbach and Robert Hill. Others present were: Superintendent Elliott, Principal Lane Pruett, and Minutes Clerk Tamre McGinnis.

Superintendent Elliott reminded the board that Board Seat No. 3, a five-year term, that is currently held by Robert Hill is up for reelection.

A filing period for those wanting to hold that board seat starts Monday, Dec. 4, and closes Wednesday, Dec. 6. The filing is at the Alfalfa County Courthouse in Cherokee on those days from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.

As the meeting opened, the board held a hearing to discuss the 2017-2018 General Fund Budget and then approved it. The board discussed the 2017-2018 revaluation costs of $22,883.13, which was lower than last year. After discussion, the board approved having Cornerstone Dirt Construction demolish and remove the building at 501, 503 and 505 Main (the old drugstore) and fill in with dirt and rock for $19,500. Superintendent Elliott acknowledged receipt of a copy of the warranty deed for 501, 503 and 505 Main in Burlington.

The superintendent said the location has several possibilities, but nothing certain at this time.

Papon & Sons received board approval to replace the guttering and down spouts on the north side of the little gym for $1,932. After a short discussion the board approved hiring Brenda Russell as a para-professional and part-time kitchen help for the remainder of the year. The following encumbrances, change orders and warrants for 2017 received board approval: General Fund –encumbrances $59,148.70, warrants $286,807.87; Building Fund – warrants $347.46; and Child Nutrition Fund –warrants $6,689.06.

Other items approved by the board include the October activity report, and board meeting dates for 2018 after review and modification. The board met in executive session about 30 minutes to review the status of the evaluations of certified probationary personnel.

An inspection by the state fire marshal was discussed. Principal Pruett Reports on Student Achievements Principal Pruett said how well Burlington's FFA did at national convention. The FFA Greenhouse and Landscape team won silver team at the National FFA Convention. Gavin McCullough won gold individual with Caitlin Flackman taking silver individual. Brenner Clark and Sadie Crusinbery took bronze individuals. The Robotics team competed in the Heartland BEST in Alva on Oct. 27 and 28. They took 2nd in the game award, 3rdin BEST competition, Most Elegant Robot and will be competing in the Regional Competition Dec. 1 and 2.

The principal complimented teacher Jennifer Newlin on being the Robotics Coach of the Year.

Principal Pruett said Hayle Smith won 3rdplace in the Soil Conservation Poster for her age division. Pruett updated on how Burlington's basketball is doing so far. The high school Elks are 2-2; high school Lady Elks are 3-1; junior high boys are 3-2; junior high girls are 4-1. The junior high girls were the Cherokee JH Tournament Runner Up.

The elementary boys are 3-2; the elementary girls are 4-1. Both teams were the Cherokee Rick Brown Invitational Tournament Consolation Champs. Pruett said he's looking into obtaining tablets for the fourth through sixth grades for use with a new technology program.

Steve Tanio from the District Attorney's office was in Burlington Tuesday, Nov. 28, to visit with Burlington students about internet and cell phone safety. He presented to the third through sixth grades at 8 a.m., followed by a presentation for grades 7-12 at approximately 8:30 a.m. Parents were welcome to attend. The meeting adjourned about 9:30 a.m.
