Cherokee woman charged with drug distribution

A Cherokee woman is facing a felony drug charge following a buy set up through a confidential informant (CI). Angelica Leeann Johnston, 22, of Cherokee was charged in Woods County with distribution of controlled dangerous substance (marijuana), a felony. This crime is punishable by imprisonment for two year to life or a fine of up to $20,000, or both.

According to court documents, on Dec. 13 Alva Police Officer John Caviness set up and monitored an alleged marijuana purchase between the CI and Johnston in Alva at the CI’s residence. Johnston was stopped in her vehicle traveling away from the scene. Alva Police Officer Kris Franta who was nearby deployed his K9 partner Gator. The canine made a positive alert to a trained odor.

The court affidavit states marked currency provided to the CI was found in Johnston’s possession. The clear baggie of a green leafy substance provided by the CI following the transaction field tested positive for marijuana. The 2003 Buick Le Sabre driven by Johnston was also seized for asset forfeiture.
