ALVA, Okla. – No team likes to suffer a heartbreaking final seconds loss on its home floor, especially when it is against a rival. The Alva High School boys felt that disappointment Tuesday evening as the Woodward Boomers hit a shot with one-second left to top the Goldbugs, 49-47.

The Bugs dropped their record to 12-7 and have lost four of their last five. Final stretch of the regular season doesn't get any easier as they host Class A No. 1 Frontier tonight at 6:30 and Class A No. 3 Pond Creek-Hunter on Monday. Alva closes the season with road games at Fairview next Friday and Woodward on Feb. 13.

Alva trailed the Boomers by five as the fourth quarter got underway, but Dalton Rose stepped up with a basket following an offensive rebound. On the ensuing defensive trip, Lane Scarbrough sent a Boomer shot back, setting up a fast break layup by Rose, who was fouled on the play. He completed the three-point play with a free-throw to tie the game at 36.

With 1:38 to go in the game and the Bugs down by four, Mitchell Meyer came through with a fast break layup following a missed Woodward shot to cut the Boomer lead to two.

Meyer was fouled on the layup, but missed the free-throw. That gave the Bugs a second chance with a rebound, and Meyer eventually went to the line for two more free-throws. He answered his previous miss by hitting both opportunities to tie the game at 45.

After Woodward regained the lead on its next possession, Meyer found himself at the line yet again with two free-throw opportunities. Meyer came through on both for two of his 13 points for the game.

Woodward, however, was able to run the clock down for the final shot. When the Boomers decided to set a play up, the Bugs defended the ball well. Despite that, freshman Max Cheap was able to let fly an off-balanced jumper in the paint for the eventual game-winner.

The Bugs were given one last chance in the final second, needing to go the length of the court. In a catch and shoot situation, Scarbrough received the ball on the Goldbug end of the floor, but the ball was tipped on the shot to seal the Woodward victory.

Scarbrough stepped up throughout the game, scoring 16 points for the Bugs, including a first quarter three-pointer. Rose finished with eight points, but the scoring dropped off with Davion Murrow adding four, Ethan Flynt with a three-pointer, Cade Madsen had a put back layup and Reece Martin hit a free-throw.

Early in the game, it looked as if it would be all Goldbugs against a very young Woodward team. A pair of Scarbrough baskets sandwiched a Meyer three-pointer from the left corner to give the home team a 7-0 lead to start the game.

Woodward came back to tie the game at seven, but Alva went on an 8-0 run to close the first. Scarbrough started the run with his first quarter three-pointer, followed by a Murrow layup, assisted by Scarbrough. Rose then added a free-throw before closing the quarter with a fast break layup with the help of Scarbrough at the buzzer.

The Bugs cooled off in the second quarter. After a free-throw off the fingers of Rose, the Boomers closed the quarter on a 18-4 run, highlighted by three baskets from behind the arc. Scarbrough and Madsen had layups during the Woodward run.

Alva trailed by as much as 29-22 early in the third quarter, before chipping away at the Boomer lead. Scarbrough put in a follow layup, Murrow took the ball to the hole on a drive and Meyer finished a drive from the right side to cut the lead to five.

After a three by the Woodward's Trace Ham, who led all scorers in the game with 24 points, Flynt answered with a three to make it 36-31 to set up the final quarter.
