Fundraiser for Kiowa man Josh Myers, who is undergoing radiation after oral cancer surgery

Mexican Fiesta Buffet and Auction at the Plum Thickett in Kiowa Sunday, March 11, 5-7p.m.

February 28, 2018

A Mexican Fiesta Buffet and Auction is Sunday, March 11, at the Plum Thickett in Kiowa for Josh Myers, who is battling cancer. He is shown with his wife Kay-Leigh and son Zander, and his parents Pat and Brenda Myers.

No. Josh Myers did not chew or smoke. A diabetic, he drinks only minimally. Yet he was diagnosed with oral basil cell cancer on Nov. 13.

Since that time Myers endured an oral surgery to remove the tumor that required a tracheotomy and a feeding tube on Dec. 16. He was in the KU Medical Center in Kansas City from Dec. 15 to Dec. 22. During that surgery, doctors also stripped a section of skin from his inner arm to use for reconstruction in his mouth. Surgeons removed 55 lymph nodes and thankfully only one tested positive for cancer.

After some healing he's made 30 trips to Wichita for radiation and is near the end of treatments. A steady stream of volunteers have taken him to and from the daily near-200-mile round trips.

When asked how Josh is doing Tuesday, his wife Kay-Leigh said, "Honestly, he's burnt, miserable and ready to get this over with." Anyone who has gone through radiation understands that sentiment. Myers is back to using a feeding tube because his mouth is too sore to eat.

Anyone who knows Myers realizes how positive he's been through this entire journey. He and Kay-Leigh expressed gratitude for all the people who've helped them in so many ways.

This entire ordeal started Sept. 11 when Josh was teaching a martial arts class known as jiu jitsu in Medicine Lodge with Pake McNally. He got hit in the mouth and thought it was a canker sore that wouldn't heal. Finally a biopsy was performed on the unhealed sore, which revealed cancer.

Mexican Fiesta and Auction

The Kiowa community is full of people that want to help further. They plan a Mexican Fiesta and Auction Sunday, March 11, 5-7 p.m., at The Plum Thickett in Kiowa.

Items may be donated for a silent auction or the live auction. Watch for more details in the Newsgram next week. To donate auction items or to volunteer at the fundraiser, call Aimee at 620-409-0007, Miranda at 620-213-2125 or Yvonne at 580-829-2343.
