At the February meeting of the Kiowa City Council, the council voted to reject Chief Steve Johnson’s letter of resignation and then voted to terminate him with one no vote as was reported in the Newsgram.

At the council’s March meeting Monday night, following executive session, City Administrator Lou Leone said that the council voted 5-0 to accept the resignation of KPD Officer Warren Howerter.

When asked about the future of the Kiowa Police Department and who is protecting the City of Kiowa, Leone answered. He said that currently the Barber County Sheriff’s Office is patrolling Kiowa as is the Kansas Highway Patrol.

Leone said the city plans to advertise for a new chief and officer. “We haven’t even advertised yet, but had six applications already,” he told the Newsgram.
