Rangers softball surrenders series to Muleriders

March 25, 2018

ALVA, Okla. – In a big series against the Conference leaders, Northwestern Oklahoma State would fall to Southern Arkansas who defeated the home team 9-3 and 10-0 (5) on day two, to sweep the series.

Game 1

Three different Rangers collected multiple hits in the game as Brittany Corrales, Morgan Kirk and Macy Madewell all recorded two.

Northwestern starter Madison Garza started off well, giving up just three runs in five innings, but ended up getting in trouble in the sixth, which is where the Muleriders took a commanding lead.

Both teams got started in the second inning where each plated two runs. After giving up two runs in the top half of the inning, the Rangers immediately responded with two of their own on a Katie Bell walk, scoring Madewell and then a SAC fly by Garrett for the second run.

SAU found the board again in the third with a groundout, but didn't score again until the sixth frame.

A four-run inning pushed the lead to 7-2 over the Rangers, but the hosts couldn't generate any offense in the sixth to keep the game close and the visitors capitalized with two more runs in the seventh.

The Red and Black did post one more score off the bat of Kirk who singled up the middle, but that would be it as the game would end, 9-3.

Game 2

The second game of the twin bill was a tough one for the hosts as they allowed 13 total hits and 10 runs, while only recording two hits in the five innings of play.

Southern Arkansas was blanked in the first inning, but came alive pretty quickly in the second, scoring three runs in the inning, all three of which were scored on singles.

As pitcher Jolie Trahan continued to shut the Ranger offense out, the lead would grow in the fifth and ultimately shut the door, as seven runs crossed the dish, finishing the game on a mercy rule, 10-0.

Up Next

Northwestern will host their next series as well, where Oklahoma Baptist will come to town for a four-game series on Thursday and Friday. The games are being moved up a day due to Easter Sunday coming up.
