Bulldogs Bite too Strong for Tigers

WEATHERFORD, Okla. – The Ouachita Tiger softball team lost to Southwestern Oklahoma State 2-1 and 9-1 on Sunday afternoon.

Ouachita (19-27, 15-23 GAC) is currently riding a five game losing skid after a four game sweep of Northwestern Oklahoma State just a week ago. Meanwhile, Southwestern Oklahoma State (12-33, 12-23 GAC) is currently riding a three game winning streak.

The Tigers are currently holding on to the final spot in the Great American Conference Tournament, but they will need to win tomorrow and split next weekend's series to ensure they will make the field.

Game One: OUA 1, SWOSU 2

Kelly Powell (Flower Mound, Texas) opened up the game with a bit of excitement as she tripled down the right field line. Moments later the senior from the Lone Star state scored off a wild pitch.

Ouachita held a 1-0 lead until the bottom of the fourth inning. Sidney Kirk hit a one out single to left field and came around to score on a double by Allyson Gafford.


The game remained tied at one until the bottom of the seventh inning. Samantha Householder reached first on a fielding error by Madison Crosby (Sheridan, Ark.). Householder then reached moved into scoring positon after a Hannah Franklin sacrifice bunt. After a Sarah Johnson (Mount Vernon, Texas), throwing error the Bulldogs had the winning run just 60 feet away from home plate.

Ouachita then intentionally walked the next two batters to load up the bases with one out in the inning. Leadoff hitter Hannah Morris lined out to shortstop for the second out of the inning and it appeared that the game would end up going to extra innings. Amanda Moreno hit a 0-1 pitch into center field to give the Bulldogs the victory in the first game of the afternoon.


Powell led the Tigers offense with a 2-for-2 performance at the plate. Both of Powell's hits were extra base hits.

Marissa Butler (Plano, Texas) was the pitcher of record in game one as the junior struck out four in 6.2 innings of work.

Game Two: OUA 1, SWOSU 9

Moreno drew a one out walk in the bottom of the first inning to give the Bulldogs their first base runner of the game. Moreno then stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Kinsey Skroh collected the first RBI of the game as she reached on a fielder's choice.

Kirk then singled through the left side of the infield to keep the inning alive for the Bulldogs. Two batters later and Skroh came around to score on what should have been the final out, but Ouachita second baseman Natalie Jackson (Mansfield, Texas) dropped the ball allowing Southwestern to take a 2-0 advantage into the second inning.


In the bottom of the third, the Bulldogs offense struck again. Moreno singled through the right side of the infield to lead off the inning. Skroh moved Moreno over on a sacrifice bunt and then scored on an RBI single by Gafford.

With two outs and a runner on first, Samantha Ortiz (North Richland Hills, Texas) hit an infield single to keep the inning alive. Two batters later and Paige Purifoy (Farmington, Ark.) hit an RBI single down the right field line to score the Tigers first run of the ball game.

For the third time in the game Moreno reached base this time via hit by pitch. Skroh moved Moreno over on her second sacrifice bunt of the afternoon. Gafford then hit an infield single to move Moreno to third base and Moreno came around to score her third run of the game on a wild pitch.


In the bottom of the sixth inning, Southwestern scored five runs off four hits to collect the run rule victory over the Tigers.

Powell once again led the offense with a multi-hit performance in game two of the double header. Sarah Chamberlain (Shreveport, La.) struck out five in the losing effort on Sunday afternoon.

Ouachita and Southwestern will play the conclusion of their series tomorrow morning beginning at 11 a.m.
