Keeping foster siblings together in Woods County

Oklahoma currently has nearly 9,000 children in foster care. Not only are there too few homes to care for all these children, but sibling sets experience added hardship. Siblings from abuse and neglect situations often have a unique and deep bond with each other. A set of three or more siblings has only a 65 percent chance of staying together in foster care. Larger sibling sets are even more likely to be separated from each other during a time when they need each other most.

Last year, Circle of Care and Alva First United Methodist Church joined forces on behalf of large sibling sets in Woods County. Circle of Care recruits, trains and supports foster parents. The agency initiated a capital campaign in 2017 to build large single family homes so siblings could stay together while in foster care. The church got behind the cause and rallied the community to build the Vera Mae home in Alva.

Raquel Razien, Circle of Care Family specialist, stated, “The Alva home provides the opportunity to heal broken families in the community by keeping siblings together and close to their biological parents.” The project is creating a sense of unity as the community works to not only establish funds for bricks and mortar, but also a foundation that will support foster families for generations to come.

With the 2732 square foot home nearing completion, Circle of Care is actively seeking foster parents who can add up to three children to their family for a maximum of six children. Inclusion in the church and foster care communities for support and valuable services are unique advantages of living in a Circle of Care home.

The Vera Mae Home family will experience a fast-paced lifestyle, defined by their ability to show God's love to children in need. Circle of Care stands ready to provide guidance and support during all phases of the fostering experience.
