We must reduce our state's tax burden

Last week, we returned to the Capitol to answer the governor’s special session call for a .25 percent tax cut. The Senate met on Monday but recessed without delivering needed tax relief to hardworking Oklahomans. The special session remains open, so I’ll continue advocating to reduce our state’s tax burden, whether it’s through the special or regular session. The objective is not just to reduce the burden on our taxpaying citizens, but to stimulate investment, job creation and overall prosperity.

Supporting tax cuts doesn't mean neglecting fiscal responsibility. By allowing individuals and businesses in Oklahoma to retain more of their income, we empower them to make choices that fuel economic growth. In addition, our state needs to remain competitive in attracting businesses and talent. By reducing tax rates, we send a clear signal to businesses that Oklahoma is open for investment and growth. When businesses thrive, they make more investments and hire more employees, which in turn promotes economic activity and contributes to the overall well-being of communities across the state.

This week marked the beginning of the 2024 legislative session, which began with the annual State of the State address. The governor shared his vision, which not only captures the challenges faced by our great state but also presents a comprehensive and forward-thinking roadmap for a brighter future for all Oklahomans.

Over the next few months, my colleagues and I will thoughtfully consider hundreds of pieces of legislation, each bearing significance for the welfare of our constituents. This thorough review process involves evaluating bills through the lens of our shared conservative values, considering the potential impact on our communities, and ensuring alignment with the needs of Oklahomans.

For a firsthand look at the legislative process, you can tune into Senate committee meetings and floor sessions live at oksenate.gov/live-proceedings. I’ll also continue to provide updates on the legislative session, in addition to keeping you informed on how legislative actions will affect our district and state.

It is my honor to serve you in the Oklahoma State Senate. You can reach me by calling 405-521-5626 or emailing [email protected].
