Excused absences for 4-H students signed into law

Series: Murdocks Minutes | Story 6

We began last week with a joint session with the House to honor Oklahoma’s veterans. It’s always an honor to recognize the brave men and women who’ve served our nation and share our appreciation for all of their work and sacrifices. The remainder of the week was largely spent on committee work. Our next deadline is approaching on April 11, and we have until this point to advance House bills to the Senate floor for further consideration.

One critical measure has already been approved by both chambers and signed into law by Governor Stitt. House Bill 1006 provides excused absences for students participating in approved 4-H activities. I was proud to serve as the Senate author of this measure and work alongside the House author of the bill, Rep. Rick West. 4-H programs across the state and nation teach kids valuable life skills and prepare them for future careers, so they shouldn’t be punished or affected academically for taking part in such activities. I greatly appreciate the governor for his support as well, as this measure will truly benefit Oklahoma’s future leaders. I look forward to seeing this legislation in effect ahead of next school year.

Another important measure is making its way through the process, HB 1805. I am also serving as the Senate author of this legislation, which has been approved by the Retirement and Insurance Committee and can next be heard by the Appropriations Committee. This policy classifies Emergency Medical Services as hazardous duty under the Oklahoma Public Employees Retirement System. I’ll keep you posted as collaborations continue with my Senate colleagues and House author Rep. Neil Hays to send this measure that assists dedicated first responders to the governor’s desk.

We’re now halfway through this year’s session, with much work still ahead. If I can be of assistance to you, please contact my office at [email protected] or 405-521-5626
