Still no management contract for Share Convalescent Home

April 26, 2024

The Alva Hospital Authority (AHA) has yet to take action on a management agreement for Share Convalescent Home. The agreement with Adam and Dayna Jordan of Beadles Nursing Home was on the agenda for Tuesday’s meeting, but the Jordans haven’t finished looking over changes with their attorney.

During the primary election on June 18, registered voters in Alva will be able cast their ballot on the proposal to convey the Share Convalescent Home property to the Alva Hospital Authority. Approval of this ballot measure is needed so the sale of the facility to Beadles can be completed.

Present for the meeting were Chairman Dr. Bo Hannaford and trustees Dr. Scott Burk, Dr. Ken Brown, Dr. Halah Simon, Dr. Callie Mosburg and Greg Bowman.

CEO Report

Share Medical Center CEO Kandice Allen said they were surprised when surveyors showed up Tuesday morning to do inspections. They expected to wrap up the visit on Wednesday. She said it looked like things were going well, and “we’re not too worried about any of the findings.”

The hospital is still working on the area in the basement that will house Senior Life Solutions, cleaning out the space and remodeling.

She said they have a void space in the basement that they’ve used like the junk room in homes to collect everything that no one wants. Staff spent Monday throwing out stuff, filling a roll-off container in two or three hours. They have a shred truck coming May 7 to dispose of old paperwork. They hope to get the basement cleaned up and painted by July 1.

Northwest Technology LPN nursing students have started their spring rotations at Share in several areas.

The mammogram project is complete, the annual test of equipment was completed, and the hospital received their credentialing from the FDA to start seeing patients on March 25. Since then they have done 15 mammograms.

The surgery department is staying busy. Dr. Gregg will be retiring in July, but Dr. Roberts will take over his endoscopic procedures. If the workload becomes too large, Dr. Roberts’ partner in his Tulsa practice will start coming to Alva to help.

Allen said she was relieved of some of her workload when Carrie Colvert agreed to take on oversight of the Urgent Care clinic, including scheduling of medical providers.

Physical Therapy had three inpatient visits, 32 nursing home visits and 104 outpatient appointments.

Reese Almack has started in the IT director position. He will be working with this brother Mark Almack to complete some projects.

Allen was happy to report the hospital’s healthcare providers are getting high reviews from patients who filled out an online form. Public reviews for the first three months of this year give the hospital a public rating of 4.92 stars out of 5 with 74 people responding.

CFO Report

Share CFO Angelica Brady reported the hospital’s cash balance at the end of March was $62,195. Accounts receivable were $3,951,968, an increase of $47,047 during March. Accounts payable balance for March was $1,662,191.

Hospital gross patient revenue for the month was $1,884,265, a decrease of $224,357 compared to February. Total patient days for March were 34 compared to 65 in February. Total clinic visits for March were 1,603 compared to 1,908 the previous month.

The hospital had a net loss of $314,599 for the month compared to a loss of $100,124 in February.

Year to date, the hospital has a loss of $295,455 compared to a loss of $553,297 at this point last year.

Medical Staff

Dr. Burk presented three appointments to courtesy staff that were approved. They are Amy Frazier, MD in geriatric psychiatry, Indira Challa, MD in psychiatry and Muhammad Puri in psychiatry.

Share Convalescent Home

Administrator Kelly Parker said Share Convalescent Home had a slight increase in census from February to March. With the arrival of warmer weather, some repairs were made to the cooling system.

The nursing home had total patient gross revenue of $234,110 with contractual reductions of $24,359 for net patient revenue of $210,403 in March. Expenses were $226,902. Interest income was $646. Share Convalescent had a loss of $15,853 for the month.

Year to date, the facility has a loss of $248,237 compared to a loss of $333,299 at this same time last year.

The Homestead

Parker said they had some move-outs that affected the March census at The Homestead retirement center. However, things are looking up as several people are about to move in and staff has showed a lot of apartments recently.

He reported the new activity director is doing great. “Residents love her, and she loves them,” Parker said. They are preparing for a Mother’s Day event in May.

Financially, The Homestead had a really good month with $79,166 in revenue and $58,061 in expenses for a net income of $21,105 in March.

SMC Foundation

The SMC Foundation met earlier in April and welcomed two new board members. David Manning was appointed by the hospital authority. William Buckles is the new at large member. They have a full board for the first time in a while.

The board approved about $150,000 to the medical center for equipment and other items.

There were nine candidates for the scholarships, and two SMC Foundation scholarships of $1,000 each were awarded. The recipients will be announced at the May 1 high school awards program.
