Oklahoma prison population projected to grow as much as 25 percent, costing nearly $2 billion

The Oklahoma Justice Reform Task Force, established by Gov. Mary Fallin to conduct a comprehensive review of the criminal justice system, recently concluded that the Oklahoma prison population will grow by more than 7,500 people over the next 10 years, even after the passage of State Question 780. This would represent a 25 percent growth in the already over-capacity prison population of 28,500 people, costing an estimated $1.2 billion in capital expenditures and an additional $700 million in operating costs.
