Wheat Crop 2017 needs rain – a unanimous opinion among elevator operators

This is a view in mid-March 2017 of growing wheat plants that are in desperate need of moisture at the Oklahoma/Kansas border.

With March temperatures hitting unseasonable 80-plus degrees, the 2017 wheat crop isn't sure what month it is. One thing the wheat craves is moisture – on that everyone agrees.

Jake Kelln, manager of the Dacoma Co-op, said, "The hot weather has kicked the wheat crop into high gear." At that rate he said the plants won't see additional tillers in the dry conditions.

Kelln said that three weeks ago the crop looked better. "We need a shot of moisture," he said. Some wheat, he said, has mites and aphids (little bitty insects) that are more prevalent in drought conditions.
