New drug dog on duty

In the past, the Alva Police Department has obtained trained drug dogs through public donations and other funding sources. The newest K9 to join the department won’t cost anything.

Alva Police Officer Kris Franta, who recently returned to the police department, owns “Gator,” a Belgian Malinois trained in drug detection, apprehension, tracking and article searches.

City Business Manager Joe Don Dunham said the local police department will commission Gator and Officer Franta will recertify in Oklahoma as a handler. Franta will retain ownership of Gator and will be responsible for his care.
