Goldbugs face tough competition at the Bill Tipton Classic

MIDWEST CITY, Okla.—The Alva High School Goldbugs’ baseball team competed in the Bill Tipton Classic beginning on Thursday hosted by Carl Albert High School facing some tough competition.

Thursday, Game One vs. Bishop McGuinness

The Goldbugs had a good start to the tournament as they took down Bishop McGuinness in their first game with a six-run victory.

Alva jumped to a three-run lead in the top of the first as T.W. Beiswanger took advantage of a passed ball to get their first run. With their first run on the board, Alva plated two more with two runners in scoring position, Max Parsons hit double line drive to rightfield to lead McGuinness 3-0.

The Goldbugs scored another run in the second before McGuinness was able to cut their lead in half, plating two runs in the bottom of the second to put the score at 4-2.

After scoring another run in the third, Alva sealed their lead with a four-run rally in the top of the fourth. McGuiness scored once more in the bottom half of the fifth, but the Goldbugs’ win was solidified as they took the 9-3 win to start their tournament play.

Dalton Rose led the Goldbugs at the plate hitting 3-for-3 with one RBI and one run. Other contributors were Zeth Warren (2-for-3, 1 RBI), Parsons (2-for-4, 2 RBIs, 1 run), Ethan Swanson (1-for-3, 1 run) and Jacob Faulkner (1-for-4, 1 run).

Stanton Earnest pitched 5.0 innings for the win allowing five hits and three runs while walking eight and striking out six at the plate.

Thursday, Game Two vs. Shawnee

The Goldbugs ended their first day at the Bill Tipton Classic, matching up against a challenging and undefeated Shawnee (24-0) team in a high scoring game.

Though Shawnee was the first on the board with a three-run start in the top of the first, the Goldbugs gave back as good as they got, answering with a big rally in the bottom-half of the inning.

With two outs and one on base, Brooks Hadwiger helped Alva get their bats going off a 1-0 pitch that led to a double line drive to right field to score Faulkner. Parsons followed with another line drive to center field to plate Hadwiger to come within one of Shawnee’s lead 2-3. The Goldbugs plated six more runners across home to pick up a five-run lead over Shawnee with the score at 8-3.

Despite that strong start, Alva’s offense struggled after that first inning, going scoreless over the next three innings while Shawnee scored 10 runs to get a five run lead over Alva 8-13.

Alva plated one more run in the bottom of the fifth, but they had to take the 9-16 loss.

The Goldbugs were led at the plate by Warren and Hadwiger each hitting 2-fo-3. Warren also picked up two RBIs and one run while Hadwiger had one RBI and one run. Other contributors were Dalton Hess (1-for-3, 1 RBI, 1 run), Parsons (1-for-3, 1 RBI, 1 run), Faulker (1-for-3, 1 RBI, 1 run) and Beiswanger (1-for-4, 2 RBIs, 1 run).

Friday, Game Three vs. Carl Albert

Despite taking a loss from Shawnee to end Thursday, Alva quickly bounced back against the host team Carl Albert to start their Friday games.

Carl Albert was first on the board in the top of the second with a solo home run over the center field fence, but Alva answered big in the bottom half of the inning. With the bases loaded, Alva’s first three runs were due to the struggles from the mound as Carl Albert’s pitcher allowed those runs with two walks and one hit-by-pitch.

That two-run lead might have been short lived for the Goldbugs, as Carl Albert answered with a three-run inning themselves, but Alva came right back to take the lead in the bottom-half of that inning. Hess started the Goldbugs off in that the bottom of the third with a three-run homer over leftfield to get the two-run lead, 6-4. Alva scored one more run to close out the third with a three-run lead, 7-4

From there, Alva plated one runner in the fourth and their final three runs in the sixth to get the 11-4 victory over Carl Albert.

Parsons and Beiswanger led the Goldbugs in that game, each hitting 2-for-3 while Parsons picked up one homer, 1 RBI and three runs, and Beiswanger finished with two RBIs and one run. Other contributors were Hess (1-for-1, 1 HR, 3 RBIs, 2 runs) and Stanton Earnest (1-for-3, 1 HR, 2 RBIs, 3 runs).

Rafferty Brown picked up the win on the mound allowing three hits and four runs while walking four and striking out six.

Friday, Game Four vs. Weatherford

Though starting another day strong, Alva took another tough loss to end Friday against Weatherford in a 10-run defeat.

Weatherford started the game with the hot bats in the bottom of the first as they rallied to plate nine runs across home starting with a solo home run from their lead-off hitter.

Alva was able to plate a runner in the top of the second off a solo homer from Earnest, and another three runs in the top of the third, closing their turn at bat off another home run from Swanson to trail Weatherford 4-9.

Despite coming back with big answers, the Goldbugs couldn’t hold off Weatherford as they allowed another run in the third, and four more runs in the fourth to take the 4-14 loss.

Faulkner ended the day with the perfect bat hitting 1-for-1 and one run, but Earnest and Swanson helped bit hitting 1-for-2 each to go with their one home runs apiece. Earnest picked up one RBI and one run while Swanson finished with two RBIs and one run. Other contributors were Beiswanger (1-for-2, 1 run) and Michael Todd (1-for-2).

On the mound, Alva had three different pitchers with Beiswanger picking up the loss pitching 0.2 innings allowing four hits, six runs while walking two and striking out two. Parsons pitched 1.1 innings allowing for hits and five runs while walking two and striking out one, and Braeden Cook pitched 1.1 innings allowing four hits and three runs while walking two and striking out one.

The Goldbugs will continue their campaign at the Bill Tipton Classic as they finished up Saturday.
