Cherokee man charged in domestic case

A Cherokee woman talked with police about alleged domestic violence and then filed for an emergency protective order against her husband. Before the day was over, police were back at her residence to take information about harassment and violation of the protective order.

Ricardo Otto Ellick Jr., 34, of Cherokee has been charged with domestic assault and battery in the presence of a minor, protective order violation and harassment by use of an electronic device. All three are misdemeanors.

According to court records, on June 21 about 2:50 p.m. Katrena Ellick arrived at the Cherokee Police Department to report a domestic violence incident. She told Assistant Police Chief Ryan McNeil that she and her husband had separated, she filed for divorce and they each had been seeing other people. She said they had been talking, trying to work out their relationship problems and attending marriage counseling.

Mrs. Ellick said approximately 8:30 p.m. June 20, she and Mr. Ellick were inside her apartment and she told him she needed time to herself, asking him to leave. She said they had been arguing earlier when he grabbed her by the throat and pushed her against a wall. She also said he shoved her, causing her to fall to the floor and kicked her.

Mrs. Ellick said after telling him to leave, she went into their 1-year-old child’s room. She was sitting in a chair holding the child when Mr. Ellick came in. She said he continued arguing and slapped her in the head while she was holding the child.

Mrs. Ellick told the officer that her husband left, but she was not able to find her cellphone. She went to use a neighbor’s phone. When she called her phone, Mr. Ellick answered. She asked him to return it. She said Mr. Ellick returned, talked with her and the neighbor, and spent the night at the apartment.

Mrs. Ellick filed an emergency protective order and it was served to Mr. Ellick shortly after 8 p.m. on June 21.

Officer McNeil was dispatched to speak with Mrs. Ellick at 8:40 p.m. She reported that Mr. Ellick was using Facebook Messenger to contact her repeatedly. She showed McNeil the messages, which he described in his report as hostile. While they were talking, more messages arrived from Mr. Ellick, and he attempted to make two voice phone calls to her.
