A little nip in the air

October 13, 2017

I got in trouble with Becky yesterday. Contrary to popular belief, I don’t have to utter that phrase EVERY day. There are some occasions when I get away with it. But yesterday evening, I just couldn’t resist the temptation. Becky gave me specific instructions to call her when I finished my work at the office so she could pick me up and save me the walk home. The weather, in case you haven’t noticed, has changed and there is a bit of a nip in the air. However, it felt so good I decided to walk home instead of placing that call. As I started across the parking lot, I decided the breeze was a little too chilly for comfort and stepped into the College Hill Church of Christ meeting house to “borrow” a jacket from the Warmth for Winter closet.

As I’m sure most of you know, Warmth for Winter is one of our major projects each year. Beginning next Friday, Oct. 20, the trailer will be parked under the awning on the east side of our building, located at 1102 College (right across from Vinson Hall). We will be accepting all sorts of jackets, sweaters, blankets and other warm winter items in preparation for our 2017 giveaway on Nov. 18 (the last Saturday before Thanksgiving). We have no doubt that the community of Alva and the surrounding area will generously provide us with plenty of items to serve our neighbors in need.

And while we’re on the subject of ministries, I am happy to announce that the Student Fellowship Building (aka the Bible Chair) will be turning 50 years old this week. You might take a moment, next Tuesday (the 17th) to offer up a prayer of praise for all the great work that has been done by area churches over the last half century to encourage the students and staff of Northwestern Oklahoma State University (RRR). Perhaps you remember a few of her directors: Hartsell Johnson, Felix Kneuper, Gary Hensen, Jon Phillips, Steve Hamm, Ryne Wilson and myself have enjoyed our time of fellowship and ministry.

And, for the record, my walk was practically perfect in every way! See you Sunday!
