Alva quarterback Stephen Willyard (12) dives for the goal line but fails to make it on a 4th down play. Making the tackle on Willyard is Gov Camargo of Pawhuska, coming up is Caleb Drummond (1) of Pawhuska, and in the background is Alva sophomore Kade Flores (16).

After a hard-fought victory against Perry last week, the Goldbugs had an easier foe in Pawhuska Thursday night, winning 48-8. The fall break game played in Alva was pretty much decided in the first half with a lopsided 41-0 in Alva's favor.

The Goldbugs managed to score six times in six possessions in the first half. It was decided to run the clock in the second half to complete the game. Alva put in wholesale substitutions, but the second string held their own. The younger Goldbugs put seven points on the scoreboard, and finally allowed Pawhuska to earn eight for the final score.

Pawhuska came into the game with a 0-7 record while Alva was 6-1.

Alva held out a couple of players due to injuries. Trevor Allison could have played if needed but Coach Taylor Schwerdtfeger decided to give him rest and recover time. Darian Malone was also out with an injured knee. The prognosis for Malone is awaiting a medical diagnosis. Daniel Toone came in for Allison at right tackle, and Caleb Chapman filled in for Malone on the defense.

Pawhuska has really suffered from injuries this season. They have six players out for the year and were able to bring only 16 players to Alva.

Alva Dominates First Half

Although Pawhuska had first possession of the ball, they made very little progress. After a punt, Alva took over on the 48. Mitchell Meyer handed off to Hess who ran for the first down. Then Meyer connected on a pass to Murrow who made it to the 27.

It took three plays to complete that first down. In three more plays, Alva had five yards to go for the goal. Meyer rushed in for the first touchdown of the game. The conversion failed, and Alva led 6-0.

The Huskies advanced only a few yards and had to punt from their 25. Alva took over on Pawhuska's 39. Meyer found Murrow wide open and passed for a 61 yard touchdown play. Murrow also ran in for the conversion. Alva led 14-0.

On their next possession, Pawhuska fumbled a high snap. The Goldbugs recovered and took over only six yards from the goal.

Meyer faked then rushed in to score. Gordon's extra point kick was good. Alva led 21-0. Pawhuska ran out the clock to end the quarter.

The second period was more of the same. Pawhuska started with the ball but made no progress and had to punt.

The Goldbugs started at the 26 and went straight to the goal on a pass from Meyer to Murrow for 74 yards. Gordon's kick was high to the left and didn't count. Alva led 27-0.

Pawhuska lost a yard on their next three plays and had to punt. Alva took over at the Pawhuska 39. Two plays led to two first downs for the Goldbugs, and they were within 10 yards of the end zone. Meyer faked to Murrow then threw to Lane Scarbrough for a 10 yard passing TD. Gordon's extra point kick was good, and Alva was up 34-0.

Pawhuska held onto the ball for three plays, losing ten yards, and was forced to punt.

The Goldbugs started with a Meyer pass to T.W. Beiswanger for the first down. Alva drew a flag on the next play setting them back five yards to the Alva 25. Meyer threw to Murrow, but there was an illegal man downfield, and Alva went back another five. Then Meyer took the snap and another flag was thrown. This time it was on the Huskies, so Alva gained five yards.

Alva was now at first and 15 on the 25. Meyer had two incomplete passes, but finally connected with Beiswanger for a 25 yard touchdown. A flag was thrown, but Pawhuska was called for roughing a passer, and the TD counted. Gordon kicked the extra point, and Alva led 41-0 at the end of the half.

New Quarterback in Second Half

With the clock continuing to run, the second half was much shorter than usual. Sophomore Stephen Willyard took over as Goldbug quarterback. Pawhuska's RJ McCann had a short kick that ended on the Pawhuska 49.

Willyard ran for 12 yards and a first down on his first play. A high snap bounced off his hands, but he held on and made a four yard gain. A hand-off to Gabe Vasquez took the ball to the 29, and another Vasquez carry made the first down.

Starting at the 27, Willyard handed the ball to Gavin Perez who gained six yards then kept it for the first down. Two more Vasquez carries took the ball to the nine yard line. From there Willyard rushed in for the touchdown. Gordon made the extra point kick, and Alva led 48-0.

With very little depth on the bench, Pawhuska continued to use their starters. The Huskies took possession and managed to drive from the 24 to Alva's 35 before the third quarter ended.

Goldbug Dawson Manning (27) experiences a thumb in the eye as he brings down Pawhuska's Brian Jeffers.

Pawhuska was first and ten at the Alva 35. McCann came in at quarterback, replacing Cade McNeill who had been QB since the beginning. McCann took the snap and carried the ball 35 yards into the end zone. McCann passed for two more points, and the Huskies had eight points on the board.

On the next drive, Alva made it to within one yard of the end zone when they were unable to convert on the fourth down.

Pawhuska took over and advanced to the 25 before the clock ran out. The score stood at Alva 48, Pawhuska 8.
