Alex Mantz, director of the Alva Chamber of Commerce, tells folks at the monthly Community Coffee about the many activities coming up for this holiday season.

The Alva Chamber of Commerce held its monthly Community Coffee Friday morning, hosted by Share Medical Center staff. Before the more in-depth speakers began, Director Alex Mantz ran down a list of the many activities coming up in the next couple months.

Mantz emphasized the importance of shopping locally for holiday gifts. "Nov. 24 is Black Friday and the 25th is Shop Small Saturday, so please spread the word. I know our retailers are gearing up for that day here in Alva. We thank you for shopping local for Christmas," she said.

Christmas Celebration Dec. 2

Dec. 2 will feature lots of Christmas activities.

Among these is the Candy Cane Cash Giveaway. "If you've been around to the retailers, many of them have a box and tickets" for the giveaway. "So if you make a purchase in that store, you can get a ticket and enter to win (...) we're probably going to give away $2,000 in Chamber Bucks."

The Chamber Bucks, she noted, stay in the community for the holiday.

"We're not just giving away one lump sum; we're going to be breaking that down and spreading that throughout the community."

At the giveaway Dec. 2, the Chamber will announce which stores those tickets came from. "It's always exciting to see how many people and how many businesses have participated."

Also on Dec. 2 is the premiere of the "Waving Wheat Trilogy" that was filmed in Alva this past summer. The premiere will include two different clips, one of them a four-minute clip specifically for the children who participated.

Alva's Christmas Parade will also take place on Dec. 2, and will end up in Alva's new pocket park, where "we'll have pictures with Santa, caroling, and cookies and cocoa," Mantz said. "So if you have not seen the new pocket park downtown with the new murals, that's where we're going to end our Christmas festivities."

That's also when the Alva Christmas lights will be lit.

"Lance Harzman has been hard at work night and day putting up our Christmas lights," said Mantz, "so we're excited to finally see those in completion that day."

Homestead Christmas Party Dec. 7

On Dec. 7, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., is the Homestead's Annual Christmas Party, noted Kelly Parker.

"We always have a nice event with local entertainment and good things to eat and lots of socialization," Parker said, "so please feel free to come out if you're not busy on Dec. 7. I think it's an away game that night, so if y'all are in town, come visit us from 6 to 8."

Municipal League Leadership Class Dec. 7-8

On Dec. 7 and 8, Alva will host the Oklahoma Municipal League Leadership Class.

"Twenty-five people from all over the state are in a leadership class through the Oklahoma Municipal League and they'll be here to tour our community and take classes in leadership," said Mantz. "We're excited that we won the bid for that again this year."

ACT I Presents "Christmas Bells" Dec. 14-16

On Dec. 14–16, Act I Theatre will present "Christmas Bells: An Adult Comedy." Show time is 7:30 p.m. each night.

The Chamber's next Community Coffee will be Dec. 15 at All Things Fabulous downtown.

Breakfast With Santa Dec. 16

On Dec. 16 the Alva Fire Department, Alva Police Department and Alva Chamber of Commerce will hold Breakfast with Santa in the fire department building, 8–9:30 a.m.

Year-End Paperwork Workshop

In January, Oklahoma Small Business Development and Northwest Technology Center (NWTC) will hold a workshop on preparing year-end paperwork for small businesses. The fee is $15, and people can sign up through either NWTC or the Chamber.

Citizens of Distinction Banquet

On Jan. 22 is the Citizens of Distinction Chamber Banquet.

"In the next couple of weeks you'll see in the paper an application for entering all of your nominations for the Citizen of the Year awards. So please take some time out," fill in your nominations and drop the application off at the Chamber of Commerce.
