Hillcats Trail by Only 3 Points Late in 86-74 Loss at North Texas

DENTON, Texas – The Rogers State men's basketball team cut an early double digit deficit to NCAA Division I North Texas to only three points midway through the second half, but the Mean Green pulled away late for a 86-74 victory at the Super Pit on Wednesday (Nov. 22) in an exhibition game for the navy and red.

Brian Harness pulled the Cats to within three at 62-59 with 10:02 remaining in the second half after Gabriel Ferreira found a cutting Harness for a layup. The basket capped a 17-6 run for the Hillcats after being down 14 points early in the second half.

Trailing by 10 points with 12:57 remaining, Brewster Peacock knocked down a triple from the top of the key to cut the margin to seven. Don Leak made it only a five-point game after a two-handed dunk for a 59-54 score at the 11:58 mark.

After a layup from the Mean Green's leading scorer Ryan Woolridge, Chase Littlejohn pulled up from 3 to make it 61-57 with 11:31 remaining.

With North Texas clinging to only the three-point edge, the Mean Green went on a quick 13-4 run over four minutes to push the lead to 75-63. North Texas continued to hold a double digit advantage for the rest of the game in the 86-74 win.

North Texas shot 58.6 percent (17-29) in the first half and finished 52.6 percent (3-57) from the field in the game.

Roosevelt Smart posted a game-high 26 points with 17 coming in the first half when he hit five 3-pointers. A.J. Lawson registered 17 points as four Mean Green hit double figures.

Littlejohn finished with a team-high 12 points. Tate Turner and Peacock added 10 points each. A total of 11 Hillcats scored in the exhibition contest.

The Hillcats return home for two straight games before opening conference play next week. RSU starts with Randall on Saturday at 4 p.m. at the Claremore Expo Center.
