Harding Women's Basketball Falls 65-58 at Southern Arkansas

MAGNOLIA, Ark. – Southern Arkansas senior guard Sue Key, a transfer from the University of Minnesota, scored a career-high 33 points to lead the Lady Muleriders to a 65-58 victory over Harding on Thursday in Great American Conference play at the W.T. Watson Athletic Center.

Harding (5-10, 1-6) remained winless in six road games this season. Southern Arkansas (3-10, 2-5) earned its first home conference win of the season, tying its season high with seven 3-pointers.

Harding trailed 60-48 with 2:27 left in the game, but went on an 8-0 run to cut the Southern Arkansas lead to only four points. Sydney Layrock had four free throws during the run and finished with 15 points.

Harding had the ball down four points with 18.1 seconds but committed its 21st turnover of the game, and Southern Arkansas made three free throws and a layup down the stretch to pull away.

Key, who entered the game shooting 18.8 percent from 3-point range, connected on 6 of 10 to lead the Lady Muleriders. Her previous career high was 20 points.

Southern Arkansas outscored Harding 16-11 in the third quarter, using an 8-0 run to push its lead to 17 points at 50-33 with 2:19 left.

Harding responded with an 8-0 run that trimmed the lead back to nine at 50-41. The Lady Bisons did not get within nine until 1:34 left in the game.

Southern Arkansas shot 45 percent in the first half, made four 3-pointers and led by as many as 10 points twice.

Southern Arkansas' Maggie Evans made a layup with 1:08 left in the second quarter that gave the Lady Riders a 34-24 lead. Harding scored the last four points of the quarter with two free throws from Layrock and a buzzer-beating layup from Sydnie Jones to cut the halftime deficit to 34-28. Jones led Harding with 16 points, shooting 7 of 8 from the field.

Southern Arkansas averaged only 3.4 3-pointers per game but connected on 4 of 13 (31 percent) in the first half.

Layrock scored 11 points in the first half with nine coming in the first quarter. She moved past Catherine McMenamy into ninth place in career scoring at Harding with 1,346 points.

The game was Harding's fifth straight away from home. The Lady Bisons return to the Rhodes-Reaves Field House Saturday to host Ouachita Baptist at 5:30 p.m.
