ECU Women's Basketball Snaps Losing Streak with Win Over Southeastern

ADA – The East Central University women's basketball team broke a five-game losing streak with a 78-76 victory over Southeastern in Great American Conference action at the Kerr Activities Center.

The Tigers (5-8, 4-5 GAC) saw four players record double-digit point totals, while junior Lakin Preisner earned her second double-double of the season, with 22 points, 11 rebounds, three assists and two blocks. Senior Aaliyah Blakley netted 14 points, freshman Madison Rehl 12 and senior Alexa Adair 11.

The Savage Storm (7-8, 5-5 GAC) scored the first two points of the game, but ECU followed with a 6-2 run for the lead. Southeastern countered with a 9-0 run over the next three minutes and the Tigers then tallied the next six points for a 12-11 lead, with two minutes left in the stanza. The teams were even in the final minutes, with the Savage Storm leading 15-14 at the end of the quarter.

ECU quickly tied the game at the start of the second quarter and the teams traded points for the next three minutes. Southeastern then used an 8-5 run over the next five minutes to hold a 28-25 lead. However, the Tigers scored the final four points of the half to own 29-28 lead at the half.

The lead quickly increased to nine at the start of the second half, with ECU holding the advantage between six and nine points for the first five minutes of the third. The teams then traded runs in the remaining time, with the Tigers holding a 58-52 lead heading into the final quarter.

ECU kept the lead around four until Southeastern was able to cut the disadvantage to one, with six minutes left to play. The teams kept things close, with the Tigers leading until the final 10 seconds when the Savage Storm was able to tie the game at 76 with a steal and free throw, with 7.1 seconds left.

Rehl was then fouled with 0.5 seconds left and sank both free throws for the 78-76 victory.

The Tigers will now get ready for a four-game road swing, starting Thursday, Jan. 18 at Oklahoma Baptist at 5:30 p.m. in Shawnee, Okla.
