Brittain Sinks Storm on Last-Second Three

BETHANY, Okla. – The Ouachita Lady Tigers needed a last second three to come away with the 69-68 victory against Southern Nazarene on Thursday evening.

With six seconds to go in the game Ouachita (11-9, 7-7 GAC) women's basketball coach Garry Crowder called a timeout to draw up a last second play. Morgan Miller grabbed the inbounds pass and then kicked it out to Madison Brittain for the game winning three pointer.

The Lady Tigers completed the first season sweep in the series on either side. Both squads had split the season meeting dating back to the 2011 season.

The first quarter of play was a back-and-forth affair between the two squads as they looked to find the others weakness. Maija Gertson hit a three-pointer with 1:58 to go in the opening quarter to give the Lady Tigers a 15-10 lead.

Coming out of the first quarter break the Lady Tigers offense roared into the second quarter on a 10-2 run. With 3:32 remaining in the quarter Aliva Huell drove into the lane was fouled by Abby Niehues while converting a layup attempt. After the free throw by Huell Ouachita found themselves up 32-16.

Southern Nazarene (7-11, 5-9) surged in the second half of play after being down 13pts at the halftime break. The Storm outscored the Lady Tigers 22-12 in the final quarter of play to make the game close down the stretch.

The Storm opened the fourth quarter on an 11-2 run to take a 60-59 lead. It was Southern Nazarene's first lead of the game since 7:38 mark in the first quarter. The Storm increased their lead to 4 points with 3:43 left in the contest.

The two teams battled back-and-forth the final three minutes of the game. Niehues scored on a jumper in the paint with 7 seconds to go in the game. Six seconds is all the Lady Tigers needed to win the game.

Three Lady Tigers scored in double figures on the night. Miller and Huell each had 14 points, while Brittain added 13.

Alexus Jones finished with 22 points for the Storm, while Niehues contributed 13 points.

Ouachita's next game will be on Saturday afternoon against Oklahoma Baptist University. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
