Storm Split with Falcons

ODESSA, Texas — Southern Nazarene picked up its first road win of the year in a 3-1 victory at Texas-Permian Basin before falling 4-3 in the second game of a doubleheader Friday.

In the opener, Ryan Mills moved to 2-0 on the year and Austin Cooper picked up his second save of the season. Mills gave up just one run, which was not earned, on five hits in five innings of work. He did not walk a batter and struck out two. Cooper pitched the final two innings as he gave up just one hit and struck out four.

Cooper was also 3-for-3 at the plate with a run scored a double while Tanner Maskey was 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs.

Permian Basin struck first in the bottom of the first on an SNU error, but the Storm tied the game in the top of the third when Maskey singled through the right side to score Garrett Perez. SNU took the lead in the sixth on a UTPB throwing error after Christian Dent stole third and scored on the error. Maskey then drove home Cooper for the final run of the game with a single to left.

In the nightcap, Cooper went 3-for-4 with a pair of RBIs and a run scored. Cody Tolbert (0-1) took the loss after giving up one run on two hits in 1.2 innings of work. Jefferson Harris gave up three runs, one earned, on four hits. He struck out three in five innings of work.

took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. Cooper drove home Cole Lee for the first run of the game before Shelby Reese drew a bases-loaded walk. The Falcons though answered with two in the bottom of the second to knot the game at 2-2.

The Storm retook the lead in the top of the fourth when Cooper ripped a single to center to score Perez, but the Falcons tied it at 3-3 in the bottom of the fifth.

The Falcons put it away in the bottom of the seventh with a run to pick up the walk-off.
