Feb. 1 marked the start of Black History Month. Black History Month is an annual celebration of achievements by African Americans and a time for recognizing and understanding the important role African Americans have in U.S. history.

In September 1915, nearly half a century after the 13th Amendment abolished slavery, Carter Woodson and Jesse Moorland founded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History (ASNLH), which was an organization primarily focused on studying and promoting accomplishments by African Americans and other citizens of African descent.
