February 22, 2018

DURANT, OKLA. – In one of the lowest scoring games of the season, the East Central University women's basketball team fell to arch rival Southeastern Oklahoma State, 53-42, in Great American Conference action.

Despite the loss the Tigers stayed in contention to make the 2017-18 GAC Conference Championship. ECU is currently tied with Oklahoma Baptist for seventh, with the top eight teams making the tournament.

The Tigers (9-15. 8-12 GAC) were led by senior Aaliyah Blakley, who tallied 13 points, six rebounds, an assist and a steal. Sophomore Maci Hanson added nine points and four boards.

The opening quarter was close from start to finish, with no team leading by more than four points. The teams combined for four ties and ended the stanza with the Savage Storm (12-13, 10-10 GAC) leading by one (15-14).

Both teams picked up the defense in the second quarter, holding each other scoreless through the first five minutes. ECU was the first to score, but the teams see-sawed back and forth for the lead from there and ended up all knotted at 21 heading into the locker room.

The third quarter was a slow one for the Tigers, as they were held scoreless for the first five minutes. Southeastern went on a 5-0 run in the span and pushed the lead to nine (23-32) three minutes later. ECU would score just four points in the stanza, trailing the Savage Storm 34-25 heading into the fourth.

The teams traded runs in the first two minutes of the fourth quarter, but Southeastern still lead by eight (38-30), with eight minutes left. The Tigers fought back with an 8-1 run to decrease the deficit to four (42-38), but could not get any closer. The Savage Storm kept pushing back and ended up claiming the 53-42 win.

ECU will now get ready for the final two regular-season games of the 2017-18 season at the Kerr Activities Center. The Tigers will host Northwestern Oklahoma State, Thursday, Feb. 22 at 5:30 p.m. and then Oklahoma Baptist, Saturday, Feb. 24 at 1 p.m. The men's and women's basketball teams will honor their seniors between the games against the Bison.
