AHS soccer teams opened season with Cordell; faced Ponca City JV

ALVA, Okla. – Alva High School boys and girls soccer kicked off their season's on Tuesday evening against Cordell on the Northwestern Oklahoma State soccer field at the Alva Recreation Center. The games were a late addition to the schedule.

The two teams will be back in action at home on Friday as they host Southeast from Oklahoma City at the ARC. The Ladybugs will kick off their match at 5 p.m., with the boys to follow.

The Ladybugs battled in the first half of the game as they held the game to a scoreless tie against the Lady Blue Devils, a team that had just come off a victory against Elk City in its previous match. But the visitors came out in the second half and put in three goals for the win.

Despite allowing three goals, sophomore keeper Destiny TeLinde recorded 14 saves for the Ladybugs. Callie Duncan was also credited with a save in the match.

Getting shots off for the Ladybugs were Jaedyn Gleyre, Tatiana Arizmendi and Leah Maier as they each recorded a shot in the season opening match.

In the second game of the evening between the Goldbugs and the Cordell boys, the Bugs were able to notch its first goal of the season in the second half to tie the game at a goal apiece. However, in the final 15 minutes play, the Blue Devils netted three shots, giving them a 4-1 win in Alva.

Freshman Noah Kearns put the ball in the back of the net for the Goldbugs about five minutes into the second half. Kearns was in the right place at the right time, scooping up a rebound off the Cordell keeper for the goal to tie the game at one.

Emmanuel Fragosa had the most opportunities on the attack for Alva as he finished with five shots. Senior Lane Scarbrough, Edgar Cabral, Payne Louthan, Stetson Jones and Kearns each got off shots throughout the contest.

AHS at Ponca City JV

The Alva soccer teams went to Ponca City on Thursday to take on the Wildcat junior varsity teams. In the girls' matchup, the Ladybugs fell to Ponca girls JV, 8-0, while the Goldbugs fell in a 2-0 outcome in the second game of the evening.

TeLinde recorded 13 saves in the second contest of the year, and Duncan was credit with two saves. Arizmendi and Justine Meyer led the Ladybugs with two shots each, and Maier added a shot.

Ponca City took a 5-0 lead into the intermission but added three goals in the second half.

In the boys game, Ehninger earned eight saves, keeping the match within reach for the Goldbugs throughout. Fragosa led the Bugs with eight shots, Scarbrough took three opportunities, and Brayden Thomas added a shot.

Zach Thomas was also credited with a save.
