Minnie Marlene was born to Margaret (Bruner) and Amby Gray in Cherokee at the old hospital on January 29, 1937, and passed from this life on April 4, 2018, peacefully at home at the age of 81 years, 2 months and 6 days.

She was raised in Kiowa, Kansas, until the death of her father. Her mother then raised her four children in the Cherokee area where Marlene graduated from Cherokee High School in 1955. She got a job with the telephone company as a switchboard operator.

In 1957, she married James Kern of Cherokee. She continued at her job with the telephone company while James enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. Anywhere they lived, Marlene worked in the banking industry. At one point they bought and ran a restaurant in Cherokee during the early years. For many years she and James would travel and help churches along the way. They spent a majority of their time between Oklahoma and Arizona, and later settled back in Cherokee, where Marlene worked at Alfalfa Electric Cooperative and then at First Baptist Church. Her beloved husband, James, passed away in 2011. She and James were members of the First Baptist Church in Cherokee. She loved Cherokee and she loved her church where she continued to serve faithfully until her death.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Amby and Margaret Gray; her brother, J.N. Gray; an infant brother; and her husband, James.

She is survived by her brother, Don Gray and wife, Linda, of Hobbs, New Mexico; sister, Ann Hawkins and husband, Russell, of Boerne, Texas; sister-in-law Wanda Gray of Jet; sister-in-law Laura Meyer and husband, Dennis, of Tuttle; niece Teri Kemp of Portland, Oregon; niece Kammie Cepeda of Oklahoma City; great nephew Kolby Arnold and wife, Kelli, of Cherokee; and her great-great nieces and nephews.
