Freedom Town Board wants gas hazard monitor

April 19, 2018

The postponed Freedom Town Trustee board was held last Friday. City maintenance man Stuart Page brought up a couple of topics about improving the city spaces in Freedom.

The board had previously talked about a heavier duty mower with automatic bagger. The board earlier looked at a couple of brochures from Hustler and John Deere. A lot of time can be wasted with manual unloading of mower bags. With mowing season upon them, the board may call a special meeting to firm up a purchase.

Page said he had sprayed the park, the baseball field and the airport, trying to eliminate stickers and weeds. He simply needs a higher capacity mowing system to keep everything in control.

The board told Page to go ahead and fix a collapsed 40-foot section of fence at the baseball field. The chain-link is still there, but the poles have rotted off. The fence stood four feet high, and there was some discussion that a modern outfield fence should be 20 feet high, but the board was content with simply repairing what was there.

A visiting inspector, working with Page and using a sophisticated natural gas sniffer, found a substantial leak near the public school on the school's side of the meter. The superintendent and principal were made aware of the problem.

Since the town of Freedom is the vendor for the natural gas, the board agreed they had a responsibility to have the tools and monitoring equipment on hand to protect the citizens. The “gas sniffer” is priced around $8,000.

Finally, Page wants to open the city dump by appointment at city hall. That way, the city can better control what is dumped there.
