Baker, McDermott-Penco carry cross from Alva to Devine Water Well

Allyson McDermott Penco and James Baker drag a cross along U.S. Highway 64 east of Alva.

This writer came across a man and woman dragging a crucifixion-type cross east on U. S. Highway 64 Tuesday morning. Thinking there might be an interesting story for our newspaper readers, I pulled to the side of the road and asked if I could talk to them. At that very moment, I recognized the woman, Alyson McDermott-Penco, a local Alva resident.

She introduced James Baker of Waukomis, who has been dragging crosses as a symbol for the past five years. She explained, "When I heard of him dragging the cross from Enid to Alva several years ago, I wanted to join in. I was very inspired as to how bold he is for Christ."

She said, "The people driving by don't really notice us so much as they notice the cross, and we hope it reminds them of the need to have Christ in their lives," McDermott-Penco said.

The pair had not experienced any close calls from big trucks rushing past at highway speeds. Baker said, "I pray for our safety each morning just as I pray for the safety of my kids when I take them to school each day. I will leave it in God's hands that we are both safe."

McDermott-Penco said her dad helped construct the cross the night before. It was nicely finished with a wheel on the end to make dragging it a little smoother.

Baker is pleased with the results from his previous trips dragging crosses. He said other acquaintances have taken up the cross display symbolism and he knows of two men who have become pastors and one drug-addicted student who became the leader of a church youth group.

Baker said that he and McDermott-Penco do not represent any particular church or organization. Their interest is causing people to focus on Christ.
