  • The Coffee House Philosopher

    Randy Kilbourne|Jan 2, 2022

About 50 years ago, Readers’ Digest used to run a continuing column about “My Most Unforgettable Character,” written by a person who knew the unique individual. After teaching at NWOSU for roughly 40 years, I’ve gotten to know a number of people who would qualify for inclusion in the unforgettable category, but one in particular comes to mind. As a first-time teacher at the university, I met Joseph Duane Budney in the fall semester of 1966. (He preferred “Joe” or “Budney”). At the time, he had finished his enlistment in the Air Force, and enro...

  • Coffeetime

    Andy and Renie Bowman|Jan 2, 2022

Face it, our floors here in the Midwest get freezing cold in the wintertime. So cold that you really can’t just ignore them. “I’ll just mosey into the kitchen in my bare feet and get me a cup of coffee and make myself a sandwich. It’s only minus 15 degrees on my tile floor.” Nope, there is something about bare feet suddenly hitting a biting-cold surface. You get a lightning strike to your senses, the old preservation instinct kicks in, and most of us beat feet to safer climates for our toes....

The device can also function...

Divisions ripping at their town and their country were set aside. America's thunderous rage felt distant. They sank posts for her parking signs. They brought solar lights for the cheery space outdoors, sharpened her bagel-slicing blades and contributed plants, all to herald what would become the town's social hub and civil common ground, Back Street Brews. Forget, at least for on...
