Christmas has come and gone for another year. There is so much to love about the season – the decorations, the sounds and smells, the time spent with family and friends, and the beauty of Christmas Eve services. Many encourage us to live in the "spirit of Christmas" all year long. While this idea has merit – after all, we are called to be giving, loving and caring throughout the year – it is worth pausing to consider the deeper spiritual truth behind the season. Does Jesus truly want us to remain in the "spirit of Christmas" all year long?...
As we continue to look into the mystery of the tabernacle, this week we want to begin looking at the leadership model that God put in place that transitions from the tabernacle/temple of old into the church today. The Elders of Israel first came to light when Moses was commanded by the Lord in Exodus chapter 3 to go back to Egypt, address the elders of Israel, and let them know that it is God, their God, that has sent him to rescue them out of the hands of Pharaoh. Moses continued to address the elders of Israel as leadership when it came to...

Sadly, there were incidents around the country marring the festive night. So much for a let up in craziness in 2025! Part of my family showed up, and Justin fixed prime rib with all the trimmings for New Year's Eve. Michelle had treats for the kids, and they had lots of fun even though they had no idea why the party was going on. They got to play outside on New Year's Eve, which is pretty cool. We had a grand time, and later the adults all went out to the new/old Nite Lite to celebrate. Justin...
News broke late Sunday afternoon that former president Jimmy Carter had passed away at the age of 100. Politics and policy aside, I admired the heck out of that man. I made my first political statement about Jimmy Carter. When I told dad that I liked Jimmy Carter better than Ronald Reagan, he asked why. I told him because I liked peanuts better than jelly beans! I mean, I was 7 years old but it is better logic than some people used in the last election. Carter was a man of faith. He was sincere and genuine and caring. He looked at people the...
Back in the 1960s, when Tom Dempsey was in the National Football League (NFL), kickers typically approached the ball from a straight-on or head-on position. Once soccer-style kickers became common in the league, most kickers began approaching the ball from an angle. Some researchers believe that this manner of hitting the ball leads to increased distance and accuracy. Certainly, professional and amateur football place kickers are attempting and making longer field goals than used to be the...
Recently a man we know died in his 90s, after serving in the military until he retired and then had a long career as a police officer until retirement again. Jimmy covered his beat not in a patrol car or on foot, but on the back of a horse. At one point, he became a training officer for young police cadets, teaching young men and women how to do their job with the help of their faithful, four-footed companion. The night before the service for Jimmy, we had the honor of sitting with the family...
Joyce Kilmer wrote: “I think that I shall never see a poem as lovely as a tree.” According to experts, planting trees is one of the most impactful and sustainable actions humans can take to improve the environment and enhance quality of life. Growing up on First Street in Alva, I spent a lot of time climbing and sitting in my favorite tree. It was one of many “Trees of Heaven,” a species which was introduced into the U.S. from China in 1784. Ours was at least 20 years old when I was first i...

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — A U.S. Army veteran driving a pickup truck that bore the flag of the Islamic State group wrought carnage on New Orleans' raucous New Year's celebration, killing 15 people as he steered around a police blockade and slammed into revelers before being shot dead by police. The FBI said it was investigating the attack early Wednesday as a terrorist act and did not believe the driver acted alone. Investigators found guns and what appeared to be an improvised explosive device in the vehicle, along with other devices elsewhere in t...
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Imagine having 5 gallons of mayonnaise dumped over your head. Well, that's exactly what the winning head coach of the annual Duke's Mayo Bowl receives as a "reward" for winning the game at Bank of America Stadium, a tradition born in 2021 as Duke's Mayo looked to carve out its unique niche in the college football bowl world. Each year, the mayo dump trends on social media — and college football fans just can't seem to look away, no matter how disgusting the idea is to some observers. "I think with my bald head the may...
