  • Wall Street climbs as some beaten-down bank stocks recover

    STAN CHOE and ALEX VEIGA|Mar 15, 2023

The S&P 500 was 0.8% higher in afternoon trading after a report showed inflation is still high but heading lower. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 58 points, or 0.2%, at 31,885, as of 2:21 p.m. Eastern time, while the Nasdaq...

  • A 2nd wave of layoffs at Meta; 10,000 jobs are cut

    Associated Press|Mar 15, 2023

Facebook parent Meta is slashing 10,000 jobs, about as many as the social media company announced late last year in its first round of cuts, as uncertainly about the global economy hits the technology sector particularly hard. The company announced 11,000 job cuts in November, about 13% of its workforce at the time. In addition to the layoffs, Meta said Tuesday that it would not fill 5,000 open positions. "This will be tough and there's no way around that," said CEO Mark Zuckerberg. Meta and other tech companies have been hiring aggressively...

  • Debunking health claims

    Marione Martin|Mar 15, 2023

Newspapers used to be printed with hot type, lead that was melted down and used in molds to make the lines of stories. Fitting stories into pages was tricky. Often you’d end up with a small space at the bottom of the page that needed to be filled. That’s when you pulled out the “filler,” a short story or a fun fact. The shorter ones might be a famous quote. At one time, the Alva Review-Courier featured such quotes provided as the Daily Curmudgeon, collected by former Alva resident Dan Baxter....
