  • Water tank construction continues

    Marione Martin|Mar 25, 2018

Work is progressing on the water storage project at Alva’s Young Street Tank Farm. A new, larger water tank is being constructed to replace the 1930s era tanks in that location. After the old tanks were removed, there was a construction pause for testing of soil to make sure it would support the load of the new tank. It was determined the site would have to be excavated four feet deeper than planned and then backfilled with gravel. Additional reinforcement was also required. This caused a change order and some additional cost which was a...

  • Carl's Capitol Comments

    Rep. Carl Newton|Mar 25, 2018

Spring break made for a fairly quiet week as far as legislation is concerned at the Capitol. Senate bills were assigned to House committees, and most meetings will begin next week. However, I did get to enjoy visitors from my district as some chose to visit on their spring break. The House Public Safety Committee, upon which I serve, held its first meeting to hear Senate bills on March 21. We heard Senate Bills 898, 905 and 908, all of which passed and are now eligible to be heard on the House...

  • The Coffee House Philosopher

    Randy Kilbourne|Mar 25, 2018

When Walter Cronkite was ten years old, the Cronkite family moved from Kansas City to Houston, Texas. Some of the South’s cultural conventions of the time shocked the former mid-westerner. The mistreatment of African Americans was quite disturbing, and he received a rather shocking introduction to conventional southern manners when addressing teachers. In his first day in fourth grade in a southern classroom, his class was asked to solve a rather complex math problem that, if solved correctly, resulted in a simple answer. Wanting to start o...

  • Prom is in the air

    Woods County Coalition|Mar 25, 2018

Winter is waning, and spring is just around the corner. Spring brings new hope and excitement. Grass greens up, flowers bloom and high school students are thinking about the prom – the prom where everybody dresses up, borrows the best car, and makes an appearance at the local gym/dance before heading out to parts unknown. It is a night that is often remembered for a lifetime. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) states about 300 teens die in alcohol related traffic accidents every year around prom night. Some simply drink...

  • Hey! What has happened to our governor?

    Jim Scribner|Mar 25, 2018

Ever since the teacher raises issue has gotten hot and heavy, Mary Fallin has avoided any public limelight. This is a continuation of the swap meet in Wichita last week. The first year for the swap meet at the Century II Convention center is history. The location of our spaces were a plus, along with a five-minute drive there opposed to a 15-minute drive to the old location. The down side was the parking sucks for the buyers with as much as a four-block walk to get in. The crowd was smaller than...

KEARNEY, Neb. – The Northwestern Oklahoma State women's golf team shot a team score of 336 during the opening round of the 2018 UNK Women's Spring Invitational at Awarii Dunes Golf Club. The 336 places the Rangers in eighth place for the event as windy, cold conditions plagued the course throughout the round. Game 1 Three different Rangers collected multiple hits in the game as Brittany Corrales, Morgan Kirk and Macy Madewell all recorded two. Northwestern starter Madison Garza started off well, giving up just three runs in five innings, but ended up getting in trouble in the sixth, which is where the Muleriders took a commanding lead. Both teams got s...
