  • How to remain strong and faithful in the midst of this life's trials

    Jordan Easley, Bible Baptist Church|Apr 19, 2024

1 John 2:19 - 2:29 After John has told us who and what to love in Chapter 1 into Verse 11 of Chapter 2, he goes on to explain to us what not to love in verses 12 through 17. We aren't to chase after what the world offers, because, much like Christ illustrated with the woman at the well, the world won't satisfy. John then encouraged the young Christians to remain faithful in the midst of the false teachers who were making things hard for them. What two principles should we follow to remain faithful to Christ in the midst of the world's trials?...

  • Answering the itch

Steve Hamm, College Hill Church of Christ|Apr 19, 2024

Have you ever felt called to do something? Maybe you have felt called to serve on the local school board or sit on the city council or the board of some charitable organization. You may have felt called to some profession such as a teacher, doctor or social worker. Whatever the case may be, there is something that drives us to participate in a variety of functions for a common good. Some people admit that they are called by God to participate in the ministry of the kingdom of God. But think about this for a moment, we are all called into the...

  • Something to remember

    Jim Scribner|Apr 19, 2024

None of the money sent overseas, "free" programs, and handouts are government funded. They are all taxpayer funded. I had a good time going to garage sales with my brother, Jeff, last Saturday. I didn't buy much, but I don't need much. If you needed children's clothes, there were plenty to choose from. Back in the day, the Gonzales family lived here. They had several children (my good friends Manual and Raul I knew best), so they hit the garage sales for attire for the family. Eventually, they...

  • A different kind of strike, part 3

    Roger Hardaway|Apr 19, 2024

As we have seen, Ray Caldwell was a really good pitcher in baseball’s major leagues although he was not always diligent in remaining sober and being focused on having a successful athletic career. In nine seasons with the New York Yankees (called the “Highlanders” until 1913), Caldwell compiled a record of 96 wins and 99 losses. Those numbers, however, were quite good since Caldwell’s team consistently had a losing record. In 1914, for example, Caldwell recorded 18 wins and only 9 losses for a t...

  • What the heck is going on?

    Doug Little|Apr 19, 2024

We used to say “The world is going to hell in a handbasket.” Now I am wondering “What the heck is going on in our part of the state?” It has been a wild couple of weeks out in this part of the state, and I don’t say that in a good way. A double murder in Texas County about two weeks ago started off the events that have transpired. A murder in Woodward a few days ago and then another double murder in Freedom a few days ago, have sane people wondering, what in the world is going on? Now I wouldn’t talk about specifics of an ongoing case if I h...

  • Putting others on a pedestal

    Dal Houston|Apr 19, 2024

The other morning, while I was sipping my coffee and trying desperately to wake myself up, I was watching the news about a topic that didn't interest me. So, I decided to flip through the channels to see if there was anything else worth watching. For those who know me, I like old movies, so the first channel I looked at was the old movie channel. It indicated some 1934 film was playing, and weirdly there was something about the title that clicked in my head and drew me to this movie – h...

  • Exhausted wings bring on clipped wings

    Andy and Renie Bowman|Apr 19, 2024

If you work and work hard, you will understand this topic – exhaustion. Too much constant physical or mental work, with no relaxation for your body and brain, can bring on serious exhaustion. And that kind of tired, with no time for recuperating, is dangerous for you. You run the risk of pushing too far over the edge, which can easily mean that you end up being grounded for a while, which is ultimately more costly for you than stepping-away time would be. Anyone with half a brain can u...

  • Gold

    Arden Chaffee|Apr 19, 2024

“The Midas touch,” “Goldfinger,” “The goose that laid the golden egg” – all these phrases are familiar to our culture as, again, gold has taken center stage as an investment tool. Gold has always been a way to store value. Prices have spiked due to geopolitical tensions and world economic woes. Gold prices have risen from $1,935 an ounce in November 2023 to $2,393 today. The United States was once a gold-standard economy, the value of the dollar based on a unit of gold, until the Depression ca...
