  • A mother's most glorious work

Pastor Paul Cole, Town and Country Christian Church|May 3, 2019

The scholars can debate a mother's most glorious work and a mother does many, many important works. Sometimes a person has a hard time determining a mother's most important works because she does so many. Elisa Morgan wrote that her daughter texted her asking for Elisa's grandmother's Peppermint Ice Cream Pie. Elisa started going through her grandmother's recipes. She found it and sent it to her daughter. She then made this astute observation. "I wonder what other family heirlooms might be...

  • Spiritually Speaking

    W. Jay Tyree, College Hill Church of Christ|May 3, 2019

James 4:7-10: Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the Devil, and he will flee from you. Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double-minded. Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep; let your laughter be turned into mourning, and your joy into heaviness. Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he will exalt you. Several years ago, I was introduced to a recording by Bob Dylan which included the recurring line “You’ve got to serve somebody.” Oddly enough, the song was c...

  • USDA extends deadline

    May 3, 2019

USDA extended the deadline to May 17 from May 1 for agricultural producers to certify 2018 crop production for payments through the Market Facilitation Program (MFP), which helps producers who have been significantly affected by foreign tariffs, resulting in the loss of traditional exports. USDA’s Farm Service Agency (FSA) extended the deadline because heavy rainfall and snowfall have delayed harvests in many parts of the country, preventing producers from certifying production. Payments will be issued only if eligible producers certify b...

  • Dinner time

    Arden Chaffee|May 3, 2019

C.S. Lewis said, “The sun looks down on nothing half so good as a household laughing together over a meal.” I agree, and some of my fondest memories involve the family dinner table. I was an only child, but Nicki and I have ample memories of sharing meals with our daughters. My dad was a merchant so his hours were regular. We could count on joining him for breakfast, lunch and dinner until my school schedule disrupted the norm. During the summer, I would ride my bike to the Farmer’s Co-op Hardw...

  • Random Thoughts

    Roger Hardaway|May 3, 2019

A few years ago, a popular movie named “Glory” chronicled the experiences of some African American soldiers who fought in the Civil War. At the beginning of the war, President Abraham Lincoln refused to allow black men into the U.S. army. Many people – including Lincoln’s military advisors – believed that people of African descent were incapable of fighting in an armed conflict. Black soldiers, they believed, would not follow orders, they would not be brave under fire, and they were not disci...

  • Late push not enough; Rangers fall to SWOSU after early deficit

    Eric Scott, NWOSU Sports|May 3, 2019

ALVA, Okla. – An early six-run deficit was too much for Northwestern Oklahoma State University baseball to overcome on the diamond Friday evening as a late rally falls short in an 11-8 loss to Southwestern Oklahoma State at Glass Family Field at Myers Stadium. Northwestern will close its season Saturday afternoon in a doubleheader with the Bulldogs beginning at 1 p.m. Entering the final two games of the season, the Rangers are 23-24 overall and look to tie the mark for most wins by an NCAA Ranger team with 25. Senior Day festivities will t...

  • Brown ends college career strong

    Ted Harbin, NWOSU Sports|May 3, 2019

ALVA, Okla. – In just a few days, Colton Brown will walk across the stage and receive his degree from Northwestern Oklahoma State University. He’s a cowboy, first and forever, but he has big dreams beyond his graduation day in Alva. He plans to attend law school, preferably Texas Tech University. But his cowboy instincts came through this past weekend by finishing his final season strong at the Oklahoma Panhandle State University’s Doc Gardner Memorial Rodeo in Guymon, Oklahoma. “It means the world to me to do that,” said Brown, a senior fr...

  • 2019 Lady Ranger's softball season

    May 3, 2019

The Lady Rangers just ended their season; they barely missed qualifying for the conference tournament. Last year's overall record of 17-33, 16-28 in conference wasn't as great a season as Coach Devries would have hoped for. Yet, the team finished ninth in conference just behind East Central (18-23-1 in conference play) – one spot away from making it to the conference tournament. The 2019 season also started off slowly for the Lady Rangers. Through the first 26 games, the Lady Rangers compiled a... Full story

  • Staying simple to stay true

    Kathleen Lourde|May 3, 2019

Nathan Braudrick became senior pastor at Alva Church of God at the beginning of April, and it was a wild ride of a launch, he said. "I tell you what," he said, laughing, "starting in April – that's a rough month to start, because there's Holy Week, Palm Sunday, Easter Sunday; it has been a mad rush, and there's a lot going on. I have hardly had time to collect my thoughts." Despite the hectic pace, Braudrick was not just willing to spend an hour to give Review-Courier readers a look inside h... Full story
