I was watering my garden and noticed that my tomato plants had some ripe fruit ready for me to pick. It was a joy to see the tomatoes there because I wasn’t even trying to grow a tomato plant this year. This plant had sprung up from some old seeds that had fallen on the ground from last year. The only thing I’ve mostly been doing has been watering the plant; it has produced fruit all on its own without much effort. Jesus promises us the same in John 15:5, “I am the vine; you are the branc...
We all have, or have had, a best friend at one time or another. Best friends spend time doing things together; they share things with each other, especially secrets, because they know that they can trust them! Best friends will do anything for each other. Proverbs 17:17 says, “A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for a time of adversity,” and Proverbs 18:24 says, “One who has unreliable friends soon comes to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.” It seems that God created us with the need to have a friend...

Locals had come to accept him as one of their own as he and his family became part of the community. Ford’s wife, Sally, had grown up there. Her father was a medical doctor so everyone in town knew her. Her husband was an outsider but Jesse had made lots of friends in town and often went hunting with some of them. Jesse and Sally also belonged to the country club. They eventually had f...

Teaching is a tradition in some families but as salaries have lagged and security concerns have surfaced, it puts districts in a lurch to meet staffing requirements. Northwestern was originally a Normal (High) School but later became known as a Teacher’s College with the number of graduates fanning out to meet the demands of a growing population. Teacher education was the driver for its expansion into the communities of Enid and W...

The July meeting of the Alva City Council was held Monday night. A long executive session turned the meeting into a 2.5 hour marathon. Green burial requires that a body be buried within 24 hours of death and not be embalmed. The idea is that the body will decay quickly and become part of the earth. Reed... Full story
DAYTON, Ohio (AP) — Bail was set Thursday at $10 million for a man charged in the shooting deaths of four people in a southwestern Ohio town earlier this month, including a teenage girl. CHICAGO (AP) — A woman who has been central to R. Kelly's legal troubles for more than two decades testified Thursday that the R&B singer sexually abused her "hundreds" of times before she turned 18 and that it was her and Kelly in a videotape that was at the heart of his 2008 child pornography trial, at which he was acquitted. Jane — the pseudonym for the now 37-year-old woman as she testified — paused, tugged at a necklace and dabbed her eyes with a tissue as she said publicly for the first time that the girl in the video was her and that...
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Apple disclosed serious security vulnerabilities for iPhones, iPads and Macs that could potentially allow attackers to take complete control of these devices. Apple released two securityreports about the issue on Wednesday, although they didn't receive wide attention outside of tech publications. Apple's explanation of the vulnerability means a hacker could get "full admin access" to the device. That would allow intruders to impersonate the device's owner and subsequently run any software in their name, said Rachel T...
