Fall has arrived in full force. The cold is now here and the leaves are starting to turn. Soon we will all be raking the yards. Fall brings a lot of different experiences: football, hayrides and, of course, pumpkin spice on everything. Soon Thanksgiving will be coming. Time certainly moves quickly. I did a lot of that when my kids were young. I think of it...
The 2017 edition of Warmth for Winter has begun in earnest! Each day, we find more bags and boxes filled with warm winter clothing, quilts, shoes and ... well ... other stuff. And by “other stuff” I don’t mean the crown jewels of merry old England. Occasionally, we find things in the collection trailer that make us wonder why. For instance, we occasionally find a single shoe, evidently separated from its life-time partner. Perhaps it is in search of a new “soul-mate.” Yeah, I like that one. On a more sinister note, however, we have been know...

In the late 19th century, most people who lived on the Great Plains were Republicans. This was so for several reasons. Most of these settlers had migrated to the area from northern states or directly from Europe. They preferred the GOP because they associated the Democratic Party with the South and slavery. Encouraged by Republican Party leaders, many Americans blamed the Civil War on the Democratic Party’s defense of slavery and slaveholders. Typically, in the late 19th century, Republican c...
