The group includes two that have played the game at the highest level before: All-around cowboy Jacob Haren of Callaway, Nebraska, and steer wrestler Trisyn Kalawaia of Waiakea, Hawaii. When the Civil War ended, Confederate army veteran Martin Van Buren Bates moved from his native Kentucky across the Ohio River into the southern part of the state that shares a name with that waterway. Bates settled near Cincinnati where he lived when not touring with a local circus. Soon, however, he moved over 200 miles northeast and bought a 130-acre farm near the village of Seville, Ohio. Eventually, the circus took Bates to Halifax, Nova Scotia. One of the locals who came to see the so-call...
People are trying to destroy this country – some from the inside out, some from the bench, some from a television station, and some from a plaintiff’s table in front of the aforementioned bench. I really don’t know what is going on with this country. We have a president who doesn’t know if he is coming or going. We have an ex-president who will be a felon at election time and one of those two yahoos will be our next president. Politics is just strange. Consider a former president who captivates his followers so much that they are sharing...
For the last two weeks I wrote about Life Lessons from a Wayward Cow, about how my son and I spent several hours on horseback riding through canyons, grass and weeds taller than our heads, through brush, trees, thickets and deep-steep streams, trying to corral and reunite a cow that had inadvertently got lost from her calf. Today, for the last lesson, I want to illustrate how something that you may dread or that looks like a bad task, situation or job may ironically turn out to be something real...
You may have been racing to get out of your marriage. You could hardly wait until your signature was still wet on that divorce decree. Maybe or maybe not. Instead, maybe you were one of those spouses who fought desperately to hold on to your marriage but lost it anyway. But now, like it or not, a divorce is in your rear-view mirror. And as you drove away from that part of your life, celebrating or sobbing, you very likely discovered something. That no matter how long and how far you drive,...
“Love means never having to say you’re sorry.” – Love Story, 1970. After 50 years of marriage, I have violated that definition many times. One of Jethro Gibbs’ seven rules from NCIS is “Never say you’re sorry.” “I’m sorry” is a phrase that loses meaning when over-used, like the word awesome and the word stuff. Is there an art to apologizing? Can you make it sincere, or do you “throw it out there” as a one-size-fits-all response to everyday interactions? According to Healthline.com, by taking res...
In my daily Bible reading, I have been going through the book of Psalm. If you ever want to be encouraged and strengthened about the trials you are going through and learn how to praise God while going through them, you need to read the book of Psalm. King David wrote a lot of the verses of which we have received over one hundred of our hymns today. Many of the chapters, not all written by David, have so much emotion about life’s struggles and victories that they are an inspiration to everyone who reads them. As many of you already know, P...

OKLAHOMA CITY – The Medicaid program's recent switch to a managed care model has been a disaster, health care providers, a consumer and a state senator said on Wednesday. The problem is more serious in rural parts of the state that already face a shortage of providers and specialists, they said. The April 1 transition to a managed care model called SoonerSelect has resulted in late payments, billing errors and a loss of patients for some, they said. "The ship is astray, I can tell you that m...
OKLAHOMA CITY — Bills that create new high school credit requirements are now law while others that would have permitted school chaplains and banned corporal punishment are dead. The 2024 legislative session ended on Thursday, marking the final opportunity for lawmakers to send bills to the governor’s desk. Gov. Kevin Stitt signed into law a measure to add a mandatory fourth math credit to graduate from public high schools, starting with the graduating class of 2030. State lawmakers passed House Bill 3278 despite criticisms that it demotes wor...

A call from a concerned citizen led to the arrest of an Alva man on a domestic assault and battery charge. On May 27, Alva police officers Anthony Ramirez and Jayce Cline were told to do a welfare check on a resident in the 900 block of Noble Street after a report that a child living at that address made comments about his mother being head-butted. Officers were unable to make contact with the resident at that address or to reach her by phone. About 10 p.m. Officer Ramirez received a call from Kenna Bence, who agreed to allow him to come to...
OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Oklahoma needs just one more win to make softball history. Tiare Jennings' two-run homer in the first inning sparked an 8-3 win over Texas on Wednesday night that left the Sooners one victory short of a record fourth straight Women's College World Series title. Oklahoma (58-7) had nine hits and three home runs against a Texas squad that had thrown three one-hit shutouts in three World Series games. Sooners coach Patty Gasso said the plan was to help pitcher Kelly Maxwell by scoring early. Maxwell had pitched a complete g...
GLEN ROSE, Texas (AP) — A Texas family got a brief scare when a nibble from a giraffe turned a 2-year-old's safari visit into an airborne adventure. Paisley Toten was in the bed of a pickup truck on June 1 when her family drove through the Fossil Rim Wildlife Center, where visitors can see exotic animals such as zebras, giraffes and sable antelope, and feed some of them from their car. The family had stopped to feed a giraffe when it grabbed Paisley's shirt with its mouth and lifted her several feet. Paisley's mother was in the pickup bed w...
PHIPPSBURG, Maine (AP) — A Maine woman enjoying a walk on a popular beach learned that quicksand doesn't just happen in Hollywood movies in jungles or rainforests. Jamie Acord was walking at the water's edge at Popham Beach State Park over the weekend when she sunk to her hips in a split second, letting out a stunned scream. She told her husband, "I can't get out!" "I couldn't feel the bottom," she said. "I couldn't find my footing." Within seconds, her husband had pulled her from the sand trap, the sand filled in, and the stunned couple w...
