  • Persisting in prayer: Trusting God amid life's challenges

Rev. Charles A. Wells, Alva Church of the Nazarene|Jul 5, 2024

The world is full of fads. I remember in the 1990s when trolls with unique hair were popular. I collected and displayed them, and there were long lines of people trying to get the latest one. Beanie Babies were the same way. But over time, my interest faded, and I moved on to the next big thing. Never let prayer become a fad. Don’t stop praying just because you don’t see immediate results. Pray anyway! Keep offering your prayers and burdens to God, trusting Him with your requests. Leave it to Him to work things out because He is God, and we are...

  • Praise ye the Lord

Steve Hamm, College Hill Church of Christ|Jul 5, 2024

I have been reading the book of Psalms in the Old Testament and have gained so much insight into my own relationship with the Lord. David and the other Psalmists bring out so much emotion and feelings in their writings. There are words that express feelings of thankfulness, praise, abandonment, rescue, anger, boldness, and many others too numerous to mention. As I recently ended the entire book, I came upon the last few chapters and I noticed the theme that ended all these psalms, and that theme was to praise God for all He has done, all that H...

  • We are in danger of not being Americans

    Jim Scribner|Jul 5, 2024

After the debacle they jokingly called a debate, our country may not be able to sink any lower. It was like two 10-year old's trying to pass the blame to each other, with us being the parents. I don't blame Trump and Biden. They are two over the hill guys trying to show they still have it. Sure, enough they don't. A guy that stumbles and talks with his eyes closed trying to form a thought is not president material. A guy that just argued about how bad his opponent has done and cannot seem to...

  • Foul balls, part 1

    Roger Hardaway|Jul 5, 2024

One thing that I doubt we will ever run out of in this country is amazing sports stories. Baseball – which at one time was the most popular American sport – used to be known as the “national pastime”. As such, that particular sport is the source of a seemingly endless supply of colorful and interesting tales. That’s because lots of colorful and interesting people have played it. One extremely odd event that occurred in a game once upon a time involved an outfielder for the Philadelphia Phillies...

  • These are the two we get to choose from?

    Doug Little|Jul 5, 2024

Why do we worship people and things, but mostly people who don’t deserve to be worshiped? It is a sick and twisted kind of idolatry, isn’t it? Case in point, we as a country stand as divided as we have ever been. The left controls about 50 percent of the country and the right controls about 50 percent of the country. Fiscally, morally, spiritually, emotionally and culturally we have about hit rock bottom and yet, we as a country can pick an inept geriatric to represent us on one side or an old blowhard whose claim to fame is wearing out his...

  • The 4th of July

    Dal Houston|Jul 5, 2024

This being the week of the 4th of July, I think it only appropriate to say something about it. Don’t get me wrong. I am all in favor of celebrating the 4th with barbeques, a trip to the lake, fireworks, good times with friends and maybe a cold beer or two. Ultimately, however we need to take a moment and reflect on what the 4th really means and its significance. I hope I don’t sound patronizing, but the 4th of July is to celebrate the day, 248 years ago, when some bold leaders came together to d...

  • It's really hard to like you

    Andy and Renie Bowman|Jul 5, 2024

Ever been looked squarely in the eyes and bluntly told you are a bitter, angry person? Probably not. After all, who in their right mind wants to be within 12 feet of a bear and throw heavy stones at that huge, furious mass of muscle and bone? Nobody wants to face that. Facing that bear would be the equivalent of standing in the same room with you while telling you this truth. “You are hard to be around. You always find a way to be angry … always. It never seems to matter what the subject hap...

  • Estate planning

    Arden Chaffee|Jul 5, 2024

Blended families are more common today than ever before. Things often go well until the reading of the will. Step-family estates can present complex challenges in estate planning, involving legal, emotional and financial considerations. According to attorneys, contested wills can cause irreparable damage to relationships that had flourished over the years. The Brady Bunch, a sitcom by Sherwood Schwartz that aired from 1969 to 1974, was a milestone program that promoted communication and its...

  • Borrowed book returned to library some 100 years late

Angela Courson, Alva Public Library librarian|Jul 5, 2024

Around mid-April, Alva Public Library received an unusual phone call. A man named Rob Gore called in to let the staff know he had in his possession a very interesting library book. The book was one belonging to the Alva City Library that his dad or one of his uncles had checked out at some point in the 1920s, making the book likely over 100 years overdue. Bob Gore wrote in his own words, "My grandparents, Earl James Gore and Cleo (Stech) Gore, got married during the 19teens and moved to Belen, N...

  • Bertoletti, Sudo win top dog honors at Nathan's Famous power-eating contest, absent longtime champ

NEW YORK (AP) — Patrick Bertoletti gobbled up 58 hot dogs to win his first men's title Thursday at the annual Nathan's Famous Fourth of July hot dog eating contest, taking advantage of the absence of the event's biggest star. In the women's competition, defending champion Miki Sudo won her 10th title and set a new world record by downing 51 links. Joey "Jaws" Chestnut, the reigning men's champion and winner of 16 out of 17 previous competitions, didn't attend this year over a sponsorship tiff. Instead he competed later in the day against four s...

  • Americans suffer searing heat to celebrate Fourth of July at overcrowded beaches and parades

    DAVID SHARP|Jul 5, 2024

Millions of people in the U.S. celebrated and suffered under heat warnings as they flocked to beaches and traveled in droves to toast their nation's birth with July 4 parades, cookouts and the always anticipated fiery splashes of color in the evening sky. Travel records were projected to fall with people jamming airports and crowding highways to reach Thursday's Independence Day celebrations, which will stretch into a long weekend for many. On the East Coast, some would-be beachgoers in Connecticut were turned away as parking at state parks...
