In Matthew 25, Jesus describing the end time judgment stated: Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in: naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me. Those standing before the Lord were confused and asked when they did...

  • Holy mackerel there, Amos! I may be losing it

    Jim Scribner|Jul 19, 2024

Last week Linda called and wanted to know where my story was. I told her I would send it in Wednesday evening. Unfortunately, it was Thursday afternoon. I am still searching for Wednesday. My computer has a way to get rid of clutter, and I am going to have to find that button for my mind. This says it all. It is okay to talk to myself, it's okay to answer myself, but sad to have to repeat myself because I wasn't listening. Enjoy Crazy Days this weekend in Alva. It looks like there is going to...

  • Foul balls, part 3

    Roger Hardaway|Jul 19, 2024

As we have seen, Alice Roth was struck by two foul balls hit by Richie Ashburn of the Philadelphia Phillies on Aug. 17, 1957, during a baseball game between the Phillies and the New York Giants. A company that specializes in statistics once estimated that the odds of a spectator at a baseball game getting hit by ONE foul ball was 1 in 300,000. That is obviously only an estimate. Such a computation would have to take into effect the size of the crowd, the number of seats in foul territory, and...

  • Remember his name

    Doug Little|Jul 19, 2024

His name was Corey Comperatore. I refuse for people to forget his name when all we can do is yell back and forth. I didn’t know him. He was a complete stranger to me. I never heard of his name before. He was the individual who was killed at the Trump rally in Pennsylvania last weekend. Corey Comperatore. He was attending the rally on Saturday with his wife and young girls when the shots rang out. He shielded his family from the bullets and was struck and killed, doing what a husband and father is supposed to do. His name was Corey C...

  • Grateful

    Dal Houston|Jul 19, 2024

There is some odd irony in today's article that I hope will become apparent. I want to discuss the normal summer weather for northwest Oklahoma. Usually, about the first week of June, the rains stop and the temperatures range in the 100s. If we are lucky, we may get the next rain in the third week of August. If not then, it will usually be late September or October before we get any relief. Thankfully, this year has been quite different – it seems like we get a good rain every 10-14 days, and w...

  • My eyes! Oh, my eyes

    Andy and Renie Bowman|Jul 19, 2024

If you see it, you can never un-see it. You hear it; it's in your memory bank forever – unless it's the phone number to the pediatrician when your kid is running a 102 temp at midnight. But usually, everything you see and hear becomes part of you – good and bad. It is kind of a scary, intimidating fact. Everything you experience while living on this earth is in your brain. And subtly, or not so subtly, it influences how you view life and interact with others. That's a fact worth remembering whe...

  • Weight control

    Arden Chaffee|Jul 19, 2024

This week's loss of Richard Simmons brought back memories of my childhood battle with weight. Richard also struggled with his weight, which led to his passion for fitness and health. He gained fame and appeared on many shows touting his approach to fitness that emphasized fun. Who could forget "Sweatin' to the Oldies?" Mealtime was always prioritized in my family. I was never encouraged to "finish my plate," but Mother always had something ready. My teen years were as emotional as is expected,...

    Marione Martin|Jul 19, 2024

The Woods County Excise Board met Wednesday morning to elect officers and approve temporary appropriations. Chairman Joe Shirley opened the meeting with board members Bob Seivert and Chris Olson present. Late in the meeting the discussion became heated as the board discussed the upcoming formal tax appeal. The county excise board and the county equalization board have the same members but they have different purposes. The election of officers was for both boards. Seivert volunteered that he wouldn’t mind being chairman, saying it was p...

  • City will save using local electrical company

    Marione Martin|Jul 19, 2024

The City of Alva is saving some money by using a local company on installation of telemetry equipment. Monday night the Alva Utility Authority (AUA) approved a change order that reduces the $427,800 bid by $78,970. The change order deletes an overlap of effort regarding the electrical system installation. Northwest Electric has agreed to perform the installation of the telemetry unit into their electrical rack. This reduces field work and technician install time for Worth Hydrochem. While the city will still receive a bill for the electrical...

  • After crash that killed 6 teens, NTSB chief says people underestimate marijuana's impact on drivers

    TOM KRISHER|Jul 19, 2024

DETROIT (AP) — A horrific crash that killed six high school girls in Oklahoma two years ago has the head of the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board urging parents to warn teenagers about the risk of driving after using marijuana. Chairwoman Jennifer Homendy made the appeal to parents Thursday as her agency released the final report on the March 22, 2022 collision between a tiny Chevrolet Spark hatchback and a gravel-hauling semi in the small town of Tishomingo. The board, after an investigation by its staff, determined that the crash w...

  • Kansas won't force providers to ask patients why they want abortions while a lawsuit proceeds

    JOHN HANNA|Jul 19, 2024

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Kansas isn't enforcing a new law requiring abortion providers to ask patients why they want to terminate their pregnancies, as a legal challenge against that rule and other older requirements makes its way through the courts. Attorneys for the state and for providers challenging the new law along with other requirements announced a deal Thursday. In return for not enforcing the law, the state will get another four months to develop its defense of the challenged restrictions ahead of a trial now delayed until late June 2...

The Downtown Aquarium in Denver has a new resident — a rare orange lobster that was rescued from a shipment of crustaceans delivered to a Red Lobster restaurant in Pueblo, Colorado. A long-term employee who is a dishwasher and head biscuit maker spotted the bright orange lobster while unpacking a shipment last Friday and alerted restaurant managers, aquarium officials said. The staff named it Crush after the Denver Broncos' legendary Orange Crush defense from 1976 to 1986. "Myself and many of my team are born and raised Denver Broncos fans, s...

    DAVID KLEPPER and FARNOUSH AMIRI|Jul 19, 2024

WASHINGTON (AP) — The leader of a conservative think tank on Thursday misrepresented partisan differences in political violence in the United States, wrongly suggesting that people associated with left-wing causes commit more violence than those on the right. ___ HERITAGE FOUNDATION PRESIDENT KEVIN ROBERTS: "Most political violence in the last 25 years has been initiated by the left." THE FACTS: Roberts' remarks came in response to questions about comments earlier this month in which he said the country was in the midst of "the second A...

  • Trump, in highly personal speech, will accept GOP nomination again days after assassination attempt

    STEVE PEOPLES and JONATHAN J. COOPER|Jul 19, 2024

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Just five days after surviving an assassination attempt, Donald Trump is set to address the Republican National Convention on Thursday to accept his party's presidential nomination in a speech designed to unify his party — and the nation — behind his third consecutive White House bid. The Republican former president, known for his willingness to attack his political foes in both parties, has promised to offer a softer and kinder message of unity following his brush with death. Trump's speech marked the climax and concl...

  • Missouri high court clears the way for a woman's release after 43 years in prison

    HEATHER HOLLINGSWORTH|Jul 19, 2024

CHILLICOTHE, Mo. (AP) — The Missouri Supreme Court has cleared the way for the release of a Missouri woman whose murder conviction was overturned after she served 43 years in prison, but she still remained in custody as of Thursday evening. A circuit court judge ruled last month that Sandra Hemme's attorneys showed evidence of her "actual innocence," and an appeals court ruled she should be freed while her case is reviewed. But Hemme's immediate freedom has been complicated by lengthy sentences she received for crimes she committed while b...

  • Obama, Pelosi and other Democrats make a fresh push for Biden to reconsider 2024 race

    LISA MASCARO and ZEKE MILLER|Jul 19, 2024

WASHINGTON (AP) — Democrats at the highest levels are making a critical push for President Joe Biden to reevaluate his election bid, with former President Barack Obama expressing concerns to allies and Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi privately telling Biden the party could lose the ability to seize control of the House if he doesn't step away from the 2024 race. Pelosi also presented polling to Biden that she argued shows he likely can't defeat Republican Donald Trump — though the former speaker countered Thursday in a sharp statement that the...
