  • Take my word for it

    Darin Kearns, Alva Friends Church|Aug 17, 2018

“Again, you have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘Do not break your oath, but fulfill to the Lord the vows you have made.’ But I tell you, do not swear an oath at all: either by heaven, for it is God’s throne; or by the earth, for it is his footstool; or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the Great King. • Spiritually Speaking

    W. Jay Tyree, College Hill Church of Christ|Aug 17, 2018

In Old Testament introduction, we will be talking about the creation of the world – “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.” The explanation is simple and clean. But there are several ways theologians and non-theologians alike have explained the text of Genesis 1. Some see a literal, six-day creation as formative. Others attempt to mold evolution and cre...

The burning oil wells in Operation Desert Storm exposed many soldiers to thick clouds of toxic smoke that are now responsible for pollution-related diseases. Most recently, the anti-terrorism presence in Afganistan and Iraq led to the creation of burn pits used by the U.S. military to dispose of trash. Garbage burning sans incinerator has been banned in the U.S. since...

  • Lawn care is so easy

    Aug 17, 2018

Dear Editor, Why does Alva look so crappy??? Our town has a lot going for it – the college, the downtown with pocket parks and green spaces, the murals, the new bank and the restored Runnymede are a few things. However, weeds are out of hand – not six-inch weeds but six-foot weeds. Lawn care is so easy compared to earlier times. There are all kinds of chemicals and equipment available. The secret is taking care of it at the right time. A six-foot weed needs to be disposed of and leaves an unsightly stalk. Most of the time the people wor...

  • Random Thoughts

    Roger Hardaway|Aug 17, 2018

Slavery existed in every U.S. state when the Constitution went into effect in 1789. Some of the Northern states, however, soon began outlawing the practice so that by 1827 the country was divided into a South that had slavery and a North that did not. Meanwhile, by the 1830s the country’s two political parties – the Democrats and the Whigs – had lots of office holders in both the northern and southern sections of the country. That began to change in 1854 when the Whigs became the Repub...

New Alva Wesleyan Pastor Paul Kirk and his wife, Phebe, have only been in Alva about a month, so they're still finding their roles in Alva and the county. As a former police officer and member of Red Cross national disaster teams – not to mention 20 years as a Wesleyan pastor – charging in where oth...
