Scripture references: Jeremiah 42 and 43 Trivia question for you: What is the longest book in the Bible? Most people will say Psalms, because of its 150 chapters. However, that answer is incorrect. The longest book in the Bible by word count is Jeremiah, and there is a story in Jeremiah 42-43 that I think we all need to be reminded of today. This story takes place after Babylon has come and conquered Judah, taking away many leaders and Judean citizens to Babylon as captives. Now, Jeremiah chose to stay with the remnant that was left behind....
Some may think that when a person becomes a Christian, all temptation just magically goes away. But the reality to those of us who are Christians is that we many times feel like Satan will never leave us alone. Satan’s demons seem to come to us from the moment we wake up till we fall asleep late in the evening. It’s like when we’re trying to finish a job outside late in the day and these pesky gnats just keep swarming around our face. We swat them away, but they just keep coming back. The demons from the evil one come from every angle and e...

“Laughter is the best medicine” is a well-known phrase. Laughter can improve mood and treatment outcomes, but what about anger? According to Samantha Reddy, too much anger harms your health. I have heard coaches tell their players, “Get angry!” Does it help win the game or merely increase stress? Research shows that getting mad is a normal response, but staying mad can cause problems. The secret to non-harmful anger is learning to express it in healthier ways. Anger causes harm to our cognitive...
Wisdom from the lips of a wrinkled old worm: “Okay, listen up, ‘cuz I’m gonna tell ya’ perzactly what The World is like. “Most of the time it looks real dark and kind’a dry ‘n crumbly feelin’. But when I tunnel straight up for a little ways, then I see a bunch’a green stalks at least twenty-six times bigger’n me. And there’s these enormous feet walking ‘round in them green stalks, all kinds of feet, some with toes, some not. The ones with no toes have huge coverings on ‘em, guess they call ‘e...
I was recently in Dallas and want to share this unusual view that I had the opportunity to see. First if you haven’t figured it out by now, one of my favorite things to do is to watch people. So, while recently in Dallas, I went to one of my favorite restaurants and bars for watching people. This establishment is located in the middle of a very expensive and exclusive shopping center. Much to my delight, this restaurant has outside dining that is situated under a great shade tree, as well as num...
The trial of Pauline Parker and Juliet Hulme for the murder of Pauline’s mother in 1954 was a national sensation in New Zealand. In the years afterward, interest in the case still remained. At least two non-fiction books examined the mysterious fantasy world the teenagers had created for themselves, trying to make sense of what Pauline referred to in her journal as “the happy event.” In England, a woman named Beryl Bainbridge decided to write about the case as she embarked upon a career as an au...
I find many similarities between having a strong faith in Jesus Christ and trying to eke out a living, or a partial living on a family farm. When you let Jesus into your heart, you realize that you are broken. You realize you can’t do life by yourself. You realize that you don’t have all the answers and that nothing really makes sense, ‘til that day you submit to your Savior. Likewise, what happens when you plant a crop? Yes, you do all the hard work of cultivating the land and planting the seed, fertilizing the crop, but there is no guara...
There is a water leak at 13th and Fair that is over a month old. The city doesn't have time to fix it, so I am going to see if I can build a dam at 12th and Fair, stock it with fish and quit wasting the water. You will still be able to get to the salvage from the west. Anybody have a dozer I can borrow? Don't forget all the activities this Labor Day weekend. I don't know if Jack will make it to the Kiowa Car Show or not. Then don't forget the Woods County Free Fair next week. There are covers...

State leaders have a complicated relationship with federal grant money. They love federal cash. Just don’t tell them what to do with it or how to do it. That’s caused the state to walk away from tens of millions of dollars meant to help Oklahomans in need. Oklahoma’s federal lawsuit over family planning grants and Republican Gov. Kevin Stitt’s decision not to participate in a summer food program for a second year are just the latest examples in the state’s love-hate relationship with federal money. To be sure, such conflicts are nothing n...
Only accredited private schools qualify for the state’s Parental Choice Tax Credit program, a voucher-like state subsidy for parents to use toward tuition. But schools need only report the name of their accreditor. There is no verification beyond that, and any accreditor goes. Among the schools approved are Goodland Academy, a middle school in Hugo that shuttered for two years but maintained accreditation and reopened in February with five students, all of whom received a tax credit. A preschool at the Oklahoma City Zoo also received state a...
