    Marione Martin|Sep 13, 2024

Alva Board of Education members had a chance to see the new activity bus with its distinctive Goldbug logos before their meeting Tuesday, Sept. 3. The bus was delivered earlier but without the colorful identifying wrap. Supt. Jeremy Brashears said the bus would be parked on the downtown square the next morning so residents could admire it. The bus was used that Tuesday night for a game at Watonga. It is a welcome upgrade from a bus that kept needing repairs. Board President Jane McDermott...

  • Building community: The power of encouragement and gathering together

Rev. Charles A. Wells, Alva Church of the Nazarene|Sep 13, 2024

"And let’s consider how to encourage one another in love and good deeds, not abandoning our own meeting together, as is the habit of some people, but encouraging one another; and all the more as you see the day drawing near" (Hebrews 10:24-25, NASB). This Sunday is National Back to Church Sunday, and I want to share a thought: you were not meant to walk this journey of faith alone! Many things stand out to me in this Scripture, and I want to share them with you. The first word that stands out to me is "encourage." We are there to encourage o...

  • How fit are you?

Steve Hamm, College Hill Church of Christ|Sep 13, 2024

In Luke 9:57-62, Jesus invites three men to follow him but each one, for one reason or another, decide that they have more important things to do. In verse 62 Jesus says, “No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God.” Jesus is teaching us that nothing in this world is more important than following him! In Luke 14:26, Jesus also says, “If anyone comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters – yes, even their own life – such a person cannot be my disciple....

  • Hot buttons

    Arden Chaffee|Sep 13, 2024

According to the Oxford Dictionary, a topic or issue that is highly charged emotionally or politically is called a hot button. Stop for a moment and think about what really upsets you. We all have a hot button. I know the hot button for most of my friends, and they are topics we avoid in conversation because they are ongoing dilemmas that are not solved at the coffee shop. Most are specific triggers or issues that provoke strong feelings that can lead to heated discussions or conflicts. Hot...

  • Bad times buddy

    Andy and Renie Bowman|Sep 13, 2024

Jim sat down at his desk that morning only to be immediately summoned into his supervisor’s office. He was assured that while he had been doing good work, he was also told that due to the company’s economic struggles, he was part of the layoffs in one month. That evening, still in shock, he slumped into the house, hugged his kids, and went into the kitchen where his wife was cooking dinner for the family. Reluctantly giving her the bad news, he saw her eyes widen in disbelief and fill with tea...

  • We are all different

    Dal Houston|Sep 13, 2024

I am often amazed when someone either says or implies that they and those who think, act or look like them are right … and that all others are wrong, are less than them, or somehow inferior. Did you know there are over seven billion people on the earth, with each having unique fingerprints, DNA, brains, personalities, beliefs, etc., and that even those who are similar in their looks or makeup, still have experiences uniquely individual only to themselves. In short, no one is the same to any othe...

    Roger Hardaway|Sep 13, 2024

When Juliet Hulme’s true identity became known in 1994, Juliet – going by the name of Anne Perry – was not happy that her cover had been blown. For the past 15 years she had been establishing a reputation as a prolific and successful author of crime novels. She feared that exposure of her teenaged criminal conduct would ruin her career. Through 1993, Perry had published 17 novels. Her first, in 1979, introduced readers to London policeman Thomas Pitt who was good at solving murders, usual...

  • Ramblings of a Redneck Farmer

    Doug Little|Sep 13, 2024

I think that we, as Christians, do a great disservice to the people we are discipling to, and to our Lord Almighty, when we pretend that every day is great and all we ever experience is rainbows and unicorn flatulence. We don’t like to talk about our struggles – at least I don’t – but we, as individuals, are not the only people who struggle with whatever the issue is. There are so many things that all of us struggle with. Mine lately has been buying into the plan that God has for my life. I’ve heard it all and believe it all, too – God’s perfe...

    Marione Martin|Sep 13, 2024

Amanda Lilley first exhibited her watercolors at Graceful Arts Gallery in Alva a year ago. In that exhibit, she displayed a varied group of works from landscapes to portraits. "Last year my show was a little more eclectic with pictures from my travels, things that I enjoy, people that I love," said the Enid artist. • Oklahoma governor delays vote on minimum wage hike until 2026

    SEAN MURPHY|Sep 13, 2024

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Oklahomans will vote on gradually increasing the minimum wage to at least $15 an hour but not until 2026, angering supporters who are questioning the timing set by Republican Gov. Kevin Stitt. Stitt signed an executive order this week setting the vote for June 2026, which is the next scheduled statewide general election after November. The governor said in a statement he waited until then, rather than calling a special statewide election, in order to save taxpayers the roughly $1.8 million it would cost for a standalone e...

  • A teen accused of killing his mom in Florida was once charged in Oklahoma in his dad's death

    FREIDA FRISARO and KEN MILLER|Sep 13, 2024

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — A teenager who is accused of stabbing his mother to death in Florida was freed last year after charges were dropped in the fatal shooting of his father in Oklahoma. Sheriff Grady Judd in Polk County, Florida, described what he classified as the "cold-blooded murder" of the teen's 39-year-old mother on Sunday at his grandmother's home in Auburndale. "And it's not just a singular murder," Judd said, explaining that the teen was charged in the Feb. 14, 2023, death of his father in Lincoln County, Oklahoma. The m...
