  • Brighten your corner

    Marione Martin|Sep 29, 2019

Driving past the Alva City Hall corner at 4th and Barnes brings to mind an old religious song, "Brighten the Corner Where You Are." The song was written in 1913, but the title lends itself well to the fresh ideas the city is displaying on that corner. An evergreen tree used to stand there. Its spreading branches also spread dripping sap on vehicles unlucky enough to park beneath it. Falling needles and pine cones littered the area, requiring cleanup of the sidewalk and parking lot. City...

    Jennifer Palmer|Sep 29, 2019

In classrooms across Oklahoma and the nation, students are taught to read using a theory that has been discredited by decades of research by brain scientists. This "three-cueing system," first proposed in 1967, is pervasive in reading instruction and curriculum. Students are instructed to use strategies that include memorizing words, using pictures on the page to decipher a word and skipping words they don't know. Teaching these strategies actually makes it harder for kids to learn to read, stud...
