  • Is your glass half full or half empty?

Steve Hamm, College Hill Church of Christ|Sep 30, 2022

“If it weren’t for bad luck, I’d have no luck at all, gloom despair, and agony on me,” are the words to a popular little song on the show “Hee Haw” back when I was a child. We would all sing along and laugh together as we watched that show. We also watched a movie titled “Polyanna” in which the famous line, “... there is something about everything that you can be glad about, if you keep hunting long enough to find it” was made famous, as Pollyanna set out on a mission to change the attitudes of an entire town to view everything in life...

  • Wilderness time

Rev. Katie Hill, First United Methodist Church|Sep 30, 2022

The wilderness is an intimidating place, full of dangerous animals and extreme conditions. It is a place that will test a person – body, mind, heart and spirit. Very few of us enter the wilderness willingly. And when we find ourselves there, we try to find our way out as quickly as possible. The Hebrew people found themselves in the wilderness a lot. Father Abraham was a nomad, traveling from place to place, often making his way through the wilderness. His grandson Jacob wrestled with the Lord in the wilderness. Generations later, the d...

  • Analyzing the threat

    Arden Chaffee|Sep 30, 2022

In the American Legion Magazine, General H.R. McMaster on our record of predicting future wars observes, “And that record is zero percent.” We have speculation about future domestic terrorist activity, observe the imperialism of Russia, bullying by North Korea, and recognize the threat from China, but need we prioritize the imminence of each? Military and civilian intelligence should already be doing that. We hear words like “unthinkable,” and “unimaginable,” categorizing human and nature’s ev...

  • Ramblings of a Redneck Farmer

    Doug Little|Sep 30, 2022

One of the bulls we use on our cowherd is an Angus bull. We were sorting some calves today and the bull was being his usual self, bellowing every chance he got. He seems to like to remind us that he is The Man. He isn’t 40 but he can go on a rant that equals Mike Gundy's. Deb told me today that whenever he bellows, he reminds her of Dad. I found it kinda funny. Actually I find it real funny that a bull bellowing reminds my wife of my father. Not that dad didn’t do some bellowing from time to time, but I didn’t really think of him a bello...

  • Random Thoughts

    Roger Hardaway|Sep 30, 2022

Prior to the 1920s, major league baseball did not, in some ways, look like the game that is played a century later. Unlike today, for example, players back then hit few home runs. Baseball insiders have argued for decades about how “lively” or not baseballs have been at different times in the game’s history. Baseballs today travel farther and faster than they did in previous times. In fact, fans of the sport often refer to the period from about 1900 to 1920 as the “dead ball” era because b...

They spoke this Sunday at Bible Baptist Church in Alva both about the Bible college they founded there, and about their astonishing experiences in Ukraine, particularly since Russia invaded. "My background is as a professor," said Ron. "I have two and a half master's degrees and a doctoral degree, so I was a professor in the United States for most of my career." When he arrived in Ukraine, "I could immediately see they... Full story

  • No. 9 Oklahoma St fueled by B12 title loss to No. 17 Baylor

    STEPHEN HAWKINS|Sep 30, 2022

WACO, Texas (AP) — Ninth-ranked Oklahoma State came up only inches short of a Big 12 championship in its last meeting against Baylor. "We use it to fuel us," Cowboys running back Dominic Richardson said this week. Nearly 10 months after that Big 12 title game loss, when running back Dezmon Jackson was knocked out of bounds just short of the end zone on a desperate fourth-down dive in the final seconds, Oklahoma State (3-0) plays its Big 12 opener Saturday at defending champion and No. 16 Baylor (3-1, 1-0 Big 12). "It'll set the tone for Big 1...

Some things to watch in Week 5 of the Big 12 season, the first full weekend of conference games: GAME OF THE WEEK No. 9 Oklahoma State at No. 16 Baylor. A rematch of last season's Big 12 title game that the Bears won 21-16 when safety Jairon McVea knocked running back Dezmon Jackson out of bounds just short of the end zone on a desperate, fourth-down dive in the final seconds. That was the last Big 12 game for both of those seniors. Before being denied their first Big 12 title since 2011, the Cowboys had won the regular-season meeting over...

  • Herd the news? Wild boar piglet adopted by cows

    Sep 30, 2022

BERLIN (AP) — A cow herd in Germany has gained an unlikely following, after adopting a lone wild boar piglet. Farmer Friedrich Stapel told the dpa news agency that he spotted the piglet among the herd in the central German community of Brevoerde about three weeks ago. It had likely lost its group when they crossed a nearby river. Stapel said while he knows what extensive damage wild boars can cause, he can't bring himself to chase the animal away, dpa reported Thursday. The local hunter has been told not to shoot the piglet — nicknamed Fri...

CHARLESTON, S.C. With all of South Carolina's coast under a hurricane warning, a steady stream of vehicles left Charleston on Thursday, many likely heeding officials' warnings to seek higher ground. Storefronts were sandbagged to ward off high water levels in an area prone to i...
