Two Burlington faculty members, Mica Andrews and Isi Ofiu, endured multiple "pies" to the face, or somewhere in the vicinity, to encourage reading. Almost every student in kindergarten through sixth-grade completed their third nine weeks' accelerated reader (AR) goal and received the opportunity to toss a plate of whip cream in the face of Miss Andrews, the librarian, or their music...

The Gospel of Luke, chapter five, tells us of Simon Peter’s powerful encounter with Jesus. Simon had been out on the boat all night with nothing to show for it but a sore back and empty nets. And now those nets needed to be cleaned and mended so they would be ready for the next day’s work. So there was the fisherman, standing on the edge of the lake, cleaning up from the night before, getting ready for the night ahead. And right in the middle of Simon’s everyday work, Jesus spoke to him. Jesus didn’t wait for Simon to be alone in the middle...

Blessed are the poor in spirit, those who mourn, the meek, those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, the merciful, the pure in heart, the peacemakers, and those persecuted for...

Two aspects of American sports culture are relevant to this story. It is a basketball tale, and we are in the midst of an annual round ball frenzy known as “March Madness” that culminates in the crowning of several collegiate national champions each spring. Secondly, sports fans have grappled for years with the issue of naming sports teams after Native Americans. Giving such nicknames to sports squads has long been a tradition in the United States, from the professional down to the local lev...
Atomic bombs: The fear has been hovering over us since the Russians developed their own weapons of mass destruction after World War II. Unilateral atmospheric tests were conducted until 1958 when Great Britain, Russia, and the U.S. agreed on a moratorium. In 1961, President Kennedy tried to extend the treaty, but negotiations faltered and testing resumed. Prior to 1958, tests were conducted at Bikini Atoll, now a part of the Marshall Islands, but in 1962 they were moved to Kiritimati, also known...
